This is such a helpful community-thank you all for being so generous with your info and support. I got implants approx. 6 years ago. Really wish I had done more research and understood my options but...here I am and I just really want them removed ASAP. I have been dealing with CIU (chronic idiopathic urticaria), fancy way of say chronic hives with an auto immune origin. While I can't link implants directly to CIU, I just really want them gone! They're way too big at this stage of life and I'm no longer interested in having foreign objects in my body. Any feedback or help finding a qualified surgeon would be awesome.

I am in my 9th day of recovery having my 26 year old encapsulated silicone implants removed, suffering from unrelated auto immune disease (it's genetic) and, like you, no longer wish to look so unnatural at 55 years old. In addition to having an explantation, I was considering a lift as well. I met with 2 surgeons in the Boston area, both top rated on this site, and a top surgeon at UMass Memorial in Worcester who was recommended by another excellent plastic surgeon that I see for other services. All three physicians were quite different in personality as well as in their recommended approach to remove the old, broken implants and replace and lift with small implants. The first surgeon located in Wellsley spent an hour with me but quickly explained that he would simply remove, replace, and lift and then asked what questions did I have. No indepth conversation. Some of his comments were sophmoric. I felt like he just wanted to book me ASAP and move on. I came close to using him based on all the glowing reviews, but then I found some disturbing photos of an explantation posted by one of his patients. Horrible. I continued my search. The second surgeon located in Boston and Concord was very warm and kind, yet explained his process in such a professional and detailed manner that most questions were answered. His cost for the explantation was the same as the first surgeon, but more expensive for the mastopexy. I booked a date only to have doctor decide two months before the surgery that he was not comfortable doing the mastopexy portion of the procedure. I reviewed every top surgeon from Boston to Worcester and finally asked my other surgeon for a referral. As an added bonus, spoke with another medical professional who used this surgeon herself and was quite pleased! I got over my prejudice against Worcester and used Dr. Doug Rothkopf. His offices are nicer than the second surgeon but the day surgery facility is as sad as I was warned. That said, I am more than pleased with the explantation. No massive incisions, no drains, very little pain, and an exceptional anesthesiologist! I was so concerned over being nauseous as I always am after surgery. First time I was fine! Because Dr. Rothkopf is cautious about my particular situation, he wants to wait and see how much of my excess skin tightens, etc. before performing a mastopexy in 3 months. They look so great now, I may skip the small implant and just have a lift. And the cost? I saved $4,000 simply driving 3 exits west on the Pike from Wellesley. Good luck in your search.
Congratulations and I hope you're feeling wonderful....Thank you SO much for all of your input. It is so very helpful to hear while I'm trying to find the 'right' surgeon. I will most definitely take a look at Dr. Rothkopf. Undoubtedly, I wouldn't have given Worcester even a first thought had you not mentioned it so thank you. You must be thrilled to have the explant behind you. I'm curious if you had them removed en bloc or just the implant itself? Also curious is it just that the day surgery is aesthetically displeasing? And...one more thing ;-) When you refer to your other plastic surgeon, would that have anything to do with facial procedures? If so, would you mind sharing their name? Most sincerely appreciate all your info...take good care.
I'm glad to share my experience. I was able to have all removed en bloc, and I still marvel how great my deflated breasts look less than two weeks out. All pain gone. Re: your question about my reference to the day surgery facility in Worcester. I was warned by a physician who used Dr. Rothkopf that the facility is tired looking, as compared to Mass Gen, Newton-Wellesley, etc., and it is. That said, the medical staff and medical experience was exceptional and that is most important to me. And Dr. Rothkopf's offices are more impressive than the other surgeons, which is always nice. And yes...I do have an outstanding ENT and Facial cosmetic surgeon. Working in Westborough, and hoping to find a place to run in for botox, fillers, etc, I was referred by a Boston doc to the Aesthetic Wellness Center and the well credentialed Dr. Min Ahn. I've been seeing Dr. Ahn and his RN partner Rebecca, who administers my botox, fillers, etc, since 2008. The AWC is off Route 9, and just a minute from 495, in Westborough You can see their offices online. Well worth the drive. I hope this helps, and if I can answer any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
That is SO helpful. Thank you so so much. I'm definitely going to consult with Dr. Rothkopf-though it's a bit of a drive for as I'm on the North Shore. I had stumbled upon Dr. Ahn in research I was doing so it's great to hear from someone who's used him. Can't thank you enough for your feedback. Wishing you continued healing :-)
So badly want mine out also. Had done in 2011; didn't stay true to me. Going to make a consult appt this week and see when I can be seen. Not sure when I can afford it, but want to be me again.
I hear you! I wish I could go back and advise that girl (me) but...here we are. Wish all the best.
I am not surebwhere exactly you are located but I am going with Paul Costas in Concord,ma. He is funny and a straight shooter. He did not try to talk me in to new implants or a lift. He thinks if you can avoid a lift that is better. Good luck
Thank you so much! I will definitely look into him. Wish you all the best with your explant :-)
Hi there! I am in the same boat as you looking for the right doctor in the Boston area. I read all these great reviews about several doctors, but then there are several really scary reviews mixed in. Can you tell me if you settled on a doctor and if you were happy with your results? Thank you for your help! :)
