Life Changing Surgery

Background: I am a 46-year-old male, having lost over 120 lbs. through dieting and a lot of exercise. At my heaviest, I weighed in at 363.3 lbs. Seeking a life change, I began a new lifestyle that led me to become a paid-firefighter in 2013. Passing the physical test required intense discipline to make the weigh-in portion of the physical. After becoming a firefighter, the only lingering issue was the excess skin/fat left over after weight loss. At my heaviest, I was a 53” waist, going down to a 36-38” waist. The idea of skin removal via surgery had been on my mind for years. I would watch Youtube videos and read reviews on various doctors. Fear of the unknown kept me from seriously pursuing surgery. Finally, in 2022, I read about drainless tummy tuck surgeries. When searching the Philadelphia region for a surgeon with great reviews and who performed this specialized procedure, Dr. Claytor’s name was the answer.

I had received consultations from two other surgeons over the last few years, but I was never sold on the procedures they offered. This is not to disparage the other doctors, but I knew I had found my surgeon once I met Dr. Claytor. I cannot stress how many times I would complain to my wife about the apron of fat left over from weight loss. Buying clothes would stress me out, I had accomplished so much physically, but this one area around my body was a constant issue for me.

I brought my wife to the consultation with Dr. Claytor, and he was warm and sincere in his desire to get the outcome I desired from surgery. A full belt lipectomy (body lift) was recommended, this was a 360° incision that would remove the skin and fat around my body. We set a date up for five months down the road. In February of 2023, we had the surgery.

The preparation from Dr. Claytor and PA Julie Holesh was phenomenal. My wife took a few days off to help with recovery. After surgery, I went home to sleep the anesthesia off. The next three days were a bit painful, but Dr. Claytor provided prescriptions for medications to manage the pain.

The first days went exactly as Dr. Claytor advised they would go. Pain and discomfort for two days, swelling through the first week. I stopped with pain medication after day three, used a cane for two days, then was able to get around on my own around the house. Each day, more progress was evident post-surgery. Dr. Claytor and/or Julie would call me anytime I had an issue or question. A HIPAA-compliant app was used to send progress photos to Dr. Claytor in between visits.

I was able to rinse off in the shower the day after surgery. Stairs were doable, although slowly at first. I walked backwards down the stairs for a few days, listening to my body as I recovered. This part I cannot stress enough, give yourself time to heal and follow doctor’s orders. If you push recovery a little too far, back off. You will recover, just respect that healing takes time.

Prior to surgery, I ordered modular wedge pillows, which were a lifesaver for recovery. Do not go cheap there, get a quality set. They were helpful with maintaining a flexed position to sleep for the first week, and made it easier to be comfortable on the couch as well.

Being a firefighter, I needed my body back to a condition conducive to the physical demands of my job. At week two, I was walking 3-4 miles on the treadmill, and doing stairs with no issues. Week three had me lifting weights at about 50% of my normal weight, again following Dr. Claytor’s orders. At week four, I had no physical restrictions, and returned to firefighting duty with no issues.

Along the way of recovery, there were a few minor issues. One suture got a small infection, for which Dr. Claytor prescribed an antibiotic and it cleared up quickly. Any question or concern was met with amazing quickness by Team Claytor. On a Saturday, late afternoon, Dr. Claytor returned a message I left that day to check on a rash that I had on my legs, which had nothing to do with the surgery itself. What I realize as I write this, and something that I did not fully appreciate when I booked surgery with Dr. Claytor, was the amount of aftercare that Dr. Claytor and Julie would provide me.

I am not the type of person who writes reviews often for services, but this surgery has changed my life. My confidence is back. I took my shirt off at the beach for the first time in 20 years. Clothes fit amazingly, and I now can’t wait to shop for new clothes.

If you need surgery and want amazing care, go to Dr. Claytor. The service from the front desk staff, to Dr. Claytor and Julie were top-notch. Good luck with your surgery, I know what it feels like to worry about choosing the right doctor. Dr. Claytor has earned my review and full endorsement.
