I approached Dr Hughes for my second Liposuction...

I approached Dr Hughes for my second Liposuction Revision after I was left feeling disappointed and frustrated from a revision I'd had with a very prominent female plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills (who had tried her best but was so gentle that the surgery was rather ineffective). I had to travel a long way for Dr Hughes so I was extremely nervous and willing to not go ahead if I wasn't convinced.

Dr Hughes' office is very busy and rather chaotic and if you are looking for all the bells and whistles of a luxury Beverly Hills plastic surgery then you probably won't be too impressed; it is all about the surgery and the surgery alone and I honestly believe that his unwavering focus is what sets him ahead of the pack.

My appointment was later than scheduled but once I was in, Dr Hughes took a lot of time with me and explained what to expect. His aftercare instructions were extremely different from that of my first revision; he didn't even want me in a compression garment this time because he was afraid the fat grafts would be compromised and I can see the difference in that already. The surgeon who did my first revision has a huge social media presence, and whilst I appreciate she is running her business, I couldn't help but feel that her popularity overshadowed her aftercare.

The day of my procedure went quickly; I literally waited around for quite a while and then all of a sudden was ushered into the OT, stripped and covered in pre-surgical wash, hooked up to an IV and was out for the count within a matter of 5 minutes. It was certainly the least glamorous pre-op treatment I have experienced but I still felt I was in good hands.

I've always struggled with anaesthesia and was very nauseated post-op. My boyfriend came to pick me up, and he said they tried to send me home with him whilst I was still vomiting so he asked if I could stay until I was stable. So the only criticism I have of the office and not of Dr Hughes himself, is that they really do have a high turnover and you shouldn't expect any form of luxury including remaining in their recovery. That being said, my nurse was lovely and Dr Hughe's answered my questions from home so I never felt neglected.

In terms of the procedure, I have a thin build and had almost no fat left for the grafts. I also emphasised that I didn't want to appear any thinner. Dr Hughes was still able to get enough fat for the revision and to correct the new irregularities that had only appeared after my first revision. He did it without drastically altering my overall appearance/shape which I am very thankful for. My initial revision gave me 12 new scars; Dr Hughes gave me only 5 even though he performed liposuction in more areas. I have one new irregularity after this most recent revision which was likely there before but has revealed itself after more fat was taken from the area. The fat grafts have 'held' more after Dr Hughes than the previous surgeon and this is very impressive given that the primary liposuction that resulted in these 2 revisions was caused by aggressive VASER lipo that caused horrific thermal burns and hence compromised the area into which the grafts were placed. Dr Hughe's job was further complicated by not only the initial mess, but the difficulties created by the first revision. Still, he was confident that he could make improvements and the results confirm his technical expertise. His skill and size enabled him to re-liposuction areas that were already affected by my initial revision, extracting more fat without creating surface irregularities.

If I could go back in time, I would never have had the very first procedure, or the first revision. But if I were to have had lipo, I wish I had gone directly to Dr Hughes and had lipo of my love handles, arms and saddle bags with a BBL. He is the BBL king so it almost seems silly that I went to him for something else!

It is now approx. 2 months post-op and whilst some of the grafted fat has most certainly not survived, the results I have are SO much better than those from my first revision. Dr Hughes just understood exactly what I wanted, where the fat was needed and how much it would take to make an improvement. The scars are fewer and better placed than my first revision procedure and Dr Hughes has responded to all of my emails within 24 hours. His character is warm, firm and no BS, which I really appreciate.

If you are looking for flattery or a Hollywood-style experience, you won't find it. Instead, Dr Hughes will deliver an impressive result due to his experience, skill and straightforward nature re: discussing what he can and cannot improve or alter. I would not hesitate to approach him should I feel more grafts are required in future (though he did admit this will be difficult given that I don't have much fat left).

Dr Hughes has most recently answered a question I had about skin treatments such as thermage and needling that I thought could maybe help heal the damage further. I was so impressed with his candid response; he reminded me that my body has been through so much and that I should leave things be for the time being to allow myself to heal. A lot of other surgeons would have either not responded at all, or touted the latest 'miracle' treatment. His honesty speaks volumes.

If you require revision lipo then regardless of where you live, I think travelling to Beverly Hills will give you the greatest number of options. I always think that we should see at least 3 surgeons before making a decision about who to go with (if only I had listened to this advice before my initial lipo which left me botched and devastated). Dr Hughes should be one of the surgeons you see; I think he has the skills and attitude to make the most difference when it comes to undoing the damage caused by other surgeons, and I am thrilled with my results. He is a fantastic plastic surgeon.
