Sorry for the short review. Here is more detail.

I am a 53 year old woman who had crowded bottom teeth and perfectly straight top teeth. Two and a half years ago I had veneers applied to my top teeth because of severe tetracyclyn staining. The results were amazing. My next project was to tackle those crowded collapsed teeth on on the bottom.

The teeth as they were were not candidates for invisalign. So the orthodontist suggested wire braces for about 10 months and then invisalign to do finishing touches (on top and bottom) to perfect the bite. Money was no object so I went for it.

The 10 months of braces were fine and painless (except for removal!!). Once removed I was put into a invisalign like retainer (not invisalign, but just a clear non active retainer). Within two weeks, I started getting neck pain, but did not make the connection. I am a very active person, and figured I did it in a cycle class. I started physical therapy and it seemed nothing was helping.

Several weeks later I was given the Invisalign trays to start using. The pain continued and became worse and worse to the point that I couldn't pick things up or bend down to kiss my daughter. I saw two doctors and after an xray and mri, I was told arthritis. Was given two different types of steroid injections.

It wasn't until i went to see this amazing physiatrist, that the peels started to come off the onion. She noticed immediately my jaw misalignment. She sent me to a TMJ physical therapist, who confirmed the diagnosis of TMJ. When I approached my orthodontist about this he told me that it was NOT the invisalign that caused it and encouraged me to keep wearing it. When I finally got in to see the TMJ PT (months later because she is very hard to get appt) she suggested I try not wearing it for a few nights (by this time I was only wearing it at night because I wanted to stop treatment). What a relief!! When I woke up it was so much better, but not perfect. At this point I go see my orthodontist again and tell him I want to stop and please make me a regular non active retainer. He kept defending the product which was very annoying to say the least. The he told me if I wore a regular retainer it would be the same problem because my veneers thickness pushes the bottom jaw back when I wear the Invisalign. ---- READ THAT LAST SENTENCE AGAIN ---- He was blaming the veneers. Um, the veneers were already in my mouth when you started the treatment...and why are you telling me this now??? Why didn't you realize this when the treatment started...or when you put the first retainer in. I say this orthodontist is definitely negligent, however, Invisalign is supposed to be great for people with veneers according to their company website. If you want more, take a look at my website which is in the review above.

This is a very long story that involves wire braces, a retainer, and then Invisalign. Once I started using the retainer, and then Invisalign, I started having severe TMJ neck pain, read the story on my blog http://braceyourselfstory.blogspot.com/ There you will be horrified to hear about how Invisalign forced my jaw back because of my veneers. Invisalign advertises that it is a good treatment for people with veneers.
