On my way to my dermatologist to have my fully ablative co2 laser done on my almost 51 year old face (my birthday is tomorrow). Have been planning for a couple months and wanted to wait till after the holidays! Up until now, the only work I've had done to my face is fillers and botox with some IPL. But have decided that I'd like the resurfacing to get better skin tone, take care of some lingering brown spots and hopefully tighten things up a bit. Have been using the same dermatologist for several years and have seen before and after shots of her work, so I am optimistic that I will have excellent results!

My goodness what did they do to you? I had co2 laser but maybe not liked that. You can look at mine I am 3 weeks out today or is it a month gosh I forgot. Can't wait to see your upcoming pics!

Maybe you had the IPL? It's a laser, but not as intensive as the fully ablative and when I had IPL done a year ago the recovery was about 5 days. It was a good procedure and took care of a lot of sun damage, but I wanted to see more.... Tighter skin, collagen production, less lines, etc, so I went for THIS! This recovery will be about 10 days with some residual pink for several months!

HI! I just had fractional CO2 via Lumens Deep FX. Totally disappointed as I was trying to get rid of sunspots, age spots. Not sure what depth was chosen by the PS., but day 3 I just looked like a mild case of sunburn. Unfortunately on men they cannot go near the beard area as it kills the hair follicules so the best your get is a 3/4 face resurface. Now I am back to square one minus $2400. Anyway was curious what laser brand you used and if you know any depth data. Thanks.

hi! I'm sorry you didn't get the results you were looking for!!! my procedure was nearly $4,000 and was a full face. she said she went pretty deep, but I don't know the exact depth. the procedure was fully ablative, CO2 laser.

I had it too. I had lidocaine applied to the face. Plus, oral medication. We had to stop the procedure and I was given a shot of an additional painkiller. I describe the pain as to perhaps having a 4th of July sparkler dragged across my face. This site has lots of reviews about 'laser resurfacing'. But there are a plethora of different lasers. Different equipment, strengths etc etc. All that said, I had fantastic results.

But!!!! It frickn hurt! I would recommend general anesthesia.

I agree! The doctor had to run back after the procedure and get me two pain pills after having to stop a few times and inject me with a dental block... OUCH!!!!

I really need a CO2 laser resurfacing, but the thought of the pain during the procedure and during recovery is holding me back. I do not understand why most doctors only use a topical numbing cream for such a painful procedure! It sounds like even numbing injections/dental blocks are not enough. I discussed the pain issue with one doctor during a consult who told me he would give me a Valium to relax me if I needed it! No mention of painkiller shots, Vicodin or anything else. I honestly don't think I can do it. I wish there was something comparable that wasn't so painful. If any doctors read this, can you please shed some light on why the CO2 laser treatment has to be such torture?

I was put under twilight sleep for fractional CO2 laser. My surgeon does not do it any other way !

The laser heats the deep dermis. The process induces 'controlled wounds' on the skin. This prompts the skin to heal by producing new cells. The CO2 laser is super aggressive. However, if administered properly, the most effective. If your only concern is pain, many doctors use general anesthesia. Which is what I would suggest. Good luck :)

1st day.... Feeling pretty rough

User Avatar

Didn't get much sleep. Slept sitting up in the recliner, so mostly cat naps. Extremely swollen and lots of heat coming from my face. Have been doing cold vinegar soaks with ice and tons of aquafor. Some relief, but the ativan doesn't really take the edge off. Am using some Vicodin from a different procedure. Going to try a shower this evening! Fingers crossed!

I had mine done today! Definite burning going on and clear oozing. Do you have this? I feel like I want to rinse my wash again. I did rinse and reapply aquaphor at 3 about an after I got home. I don't remember if he said to wash again before bed and nothing is on the post instructions. Did you wash again the first day at night ? Any other helpful tips to share?

Congrats! Yea definitely oozing right now. They told me I could shower today, but I'm waiting till tomorrow morning bc I have my first post op. I did gently wipe some of the aquaphor off, then did cold water vinegar soaks and put on fresh layer of aquaphor on. My eyes are still like slits from the swelling. I'm sleeping/resting in a recliner to keep swelling down. Good luck!! Holier if you have more questions!

Thank you! I ended up soaking guaze in water. Straight up water stings so bad! I don't think I'm ready for vinegar yet. After rinsing with the gauze I reapplied more aquaphor and took two Tylenol. Feels so much better!! I'm very swollen around the eyes too. I'm praying I can battle through. So glad to have someone to talk too! Happy healing from Michigan!

I'm also using a small personal fan to keep my face cool and that helps, just don't let the aquaphor get dried out. Hope you feel better soon!

Hi madnelson and sunfire, I'm having same procedure in a month... just preparing. What kind of vinegar, boiled / cooled water, what size gauze , use about how many per cleanse, do you really get all aquafor off or some remains ??? How many days of stinging? antivirals and antibiotics ? Sorry for so many questions.

Wishing you both tremendous success, beautiful results and thanks for your diary and comments.

Hi Maura! I'm using distilled white vinegar and ice water. I have two towels my doctor sent me home with. They are like shamis. I use one for upper part of face and one for lower. It doesn't seem like the aquafor all comes off, even in shower, but you won't want your skin to be dry very long bc it is very painful when it's dry! My doctor has me on antiviral for 10 days and antibiotic for 7 days. I'm on day 4 and still hot, tight and stinging skin. I have tremendous faith in my dermatologist, so I'm VERY hopeful! Good luck!!

Hi Maura, sorry for the late reply. I'm using 1 part vinegar to 5 parts of distilled water. I mixed it in a new dishwasher clean Tupperware container. I change the water everyday and since I live in Michigan I keep my gallon of distilled water in my garage so it's nice and cold. In the first few days I didn't like it too cold because everything stings. During that time, I tolerated the water at room temperature. I used a 3x3 or close to square gauze I purchased at Walgreens. Get a lot!! I would soak them in the container and put them on my face for relief as well as for washing and drying. Pat only, you not gonna want to rub! I did not tolerate doing any washing in the shower so I just rinsed off and washed my face over the sink. You do not get all the aquaphor off and will not want too. Your skin is very sensitive to the touch and air. This aquaphor barrier is very much needed but also very annoying. I'm on day 7 and thankful to finally be using Cetaphil Moisturizer on some areas and aquaphor on other more sensitive areas that are still healing like around the eyes. I swelled greatly around my eyes! Yikes! I used tiny ice packs over my eyes but on top of a very soft half sheet of vinegar/water soak paper towel. I chose not to take any premedication like an antibiotic. Have had absolutely no issues. The first 48 were the absolute worst for me. The burn and oozing is tough. If you make through that then you can make through every else. Ps. I was given hydrocortisone cream for the itching and used it twice a day for two days. It doesn't last long but you will love the relief it gives even if for a few hours from the itching. Best of luck

I am 50 years old, had co2 laser done yesterday...Just like your description had only a few fillers and decided this treatment would work better, I am very swollen red and crusty, really did not get much aftercare advice, I bought aquaphor after reading reviews on this site, was curious about the vinegar soaks, what your instructions were? Did they recommend Ibuprofen for swelling.....My instructions were to avoid them so my body could go through the anti inflammatory process's? Anyway very uncomfortable like what you describe!
February 12, 2017
Thanks for sharing your experience! What type of numbing or anesthesia did you have? I think you will be very happy with your results.

thank YOU!! I had numbing cream before the procedure, shots of lidocaine throughout the procedure and orally took Ativan to calm my nerves. It was pretty pain free!!! good luck!

Thank you! Pretty painful today, but keeping my eye on the prize! The amount of swelling has really surprised me! First check up tomorrow at noon!

How did your check up go? I was surprised by the amount of swelling too. I can barely see today. Did they say anything about swelling and oozing? Good gracious this is quite the deal. Lol

Check up went fine. I'm doing all the things I'm supposed top and on track. I go back next week for my 7 day checkup. The oozing is gross, but expected. She told me I could blot it with clean tissues or towels. I'm post pics from this morning!

Is this the old-school CO2 that leaves you looking like a burn victim? I had it in in 1997 and it took 2 weeks to even unwrap my face. Loved it but I hear no one does it anymore.
