Having Explant While Breastfeeding - Baton Rouge, LA

I had saline 350cc sub muscular implants placed through peri areolar incision in February 2008. Prior to the augmentation I was probably about a 30-32 a or b, but I wasn't wearing a properly fitting bra so all I know for sure is that my boobs were small. I'm 5'3 and was about 125lbs.
It was a boob job well done, but I never exactly felt comfortable. I asked for full c cup but was probably around a d-dd. in a properly fitting bra I was a 30 e. I found myself wearing sports bras a lot and trying to minimize the bulk on my chest.
Fast forward 6 years and my firstborn is 11 months but doesn't seem to be weaning anytime soon. also, we are planning to try for #2 soon. So, I don't think I'll be done breastfeeding for a long time. I've grown more and more annoyed by these boobs and once I got pregnant and my milk came in I regretted them more than ever. Not only did I resent them because I could have ruined my chance to nurse my son, but I was so huge and engorged the implants made everything worse. Nursing was difficult for us in the beginning and I thought many times that not having implants would have made it easier.
I've lost about 10lbs since getting the implants, I feel totally top heavy, uncomfortable, and annoyed by these bags. Also running is aggravating.
I must say, if I never would have gotten them, I don't think I could appreciate my natural body as much, but I can't help but feel some regret.
I have scheduled my explant with dr ann reilley in Baton Rouge for October 7. She was the first surgeon I consulted with. I tried to get in touch with dr Gary cox but his nurse never called me back and that was months ago so that kinda put me off.
I was very comfortable with dr reilley, she didn't try to dissuade me at all. The breastfeeding detail didn't seem to faze her. She offered to drain the implants right then and there. I decided to wait until the operation so I didn't have to pay and extra $100. It will be performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation. I will not be having a lift or a capsulectomy. I will have an infra mammary incision this time because obviously going through the original nipple incision would make breastfeeding a little tricky.
I've been having second thoughts but that's normal (especially for me). I really think I will be so glad about this decision. Let's hope so. I'll put up some pics later and update on surgery day.

Good luck on your journey! I'll be watching your thread, as our stories our similar. I want them out because of my struggles with nursing, and I don't want to wean. I'm still searching for a surgeon that will remove en bloc because I have a silicone rupture in the left...

Oh no! good luck to you too. Hope you find one soon.

I am on the same boat ! Was a 24b in 2010 and got 400cc - wanted to be a C ended up a DD and after baby no 1 at 5"7 and 120lbs I has 36HHH and hated my body. I Breastfed for 17 months before becoming pregnant with baby No2. Started pregnancy at 117lbs with 34DDD and they have stayed the same - he is 8 weeks old but I still feel SO top heavy. I want them out SO bad but am afraid it with disrupt breastfeeding him. Would love to hear how it's going post surgery

Well I had my preop visit last week and signed consents, paid and got instructions. If I was going to bail out, it would be now. I guess it's just normal to have second thoughts. But even when my boobs get smaller after breastfeeding I still don't think I would ever be happy with these things in me.
Surgery is Tuesday morning. I'm getting pretty excited.
I'm supposed to be using hibicleanse the night before, but I don't think you're supposed to use that while breastfeeding. I'll be calling them tomorrow to confirm my appt and I'll ask them about it.
Also, I was just planning on taking tylenol and Advil for pain since I'm nursing. Hope I'm not being naive.

I wonder if they'll allow hibiclense on the areas being incised...the inframamary fold? Also, you can call infant risk about hibiclense, as well as stronger pain meds. Hydroxide be (the stuff in Vicodin and norco is generally regarded as safe, I think). http://m.infantrisk.com

*hydrocodone!! (not hydroxide!!-darn spell check, grr.)

Haha :) Thanks I will check. Yeah the instructions said use hibicleanse all over my body, then the next line said do not use if nursing. So.... I don't know what they were thinking.

Not sure if you're still online...but I've scheduled explant and was wondering what you did instead of hibiclense? I've been given my preop instructions and they say the same thing (hibiclense from neck to waist). I'm supposed to go through with it next Wednesday!)

I ended up just avoiding my nipple. The infant risk hotline lady told me that it should be fine as long as it wasn't where his mouth would be. They also covered my nipples during the prep because they use it to clean the site before surgery. Good luck! I'm still very happy about my decision.

Thank you! Any nerve damage from explant? Were you numb at all from implant (if so did it improve with explant)? I'm so nervous of how it all will affect breastfeeding (short and long term).
January 16, 2015
So, I had a little bit of numbness from my implant on the under side of my right breast. Now, after explant, the right incision site is still numb to a degree but it seems like the feeling is on it's way back because I have tingling and stuff. It seems like the numbness I had from the implant has just shifted down to right about the same area as the incision so it's hard to tell what numbness if from what. See, after explant, when your skin contracts what used to be boob is now skin over your ribs, that's what I mean by shifted. For instance my explant incisions which were right in the crease/ fold are now about and inch or more below by breast fold due to skin contraction. Did all that make sense? I have had no problems with breastfeeding at all. Of course it would have been a different story if I would have had then removed through my original peri areolar incisions.

Sorry to keep bothering you... How long was it until you could pick up your babe? I've been told 6 weeks, and that I'll have drains (4!) in for possibly that long. I was told this in my preop and I'm scared to death of how it's going to affect mine and my little's relationship. We nurse to sleep and side lying nurse for naps and nighttime. I'm so scared and think I might cancel.
January 17, 2015
Not at all, that's why I posted this so I could help people like you. Ok, I didn't have drains at all so I don't know if that would make a difference. My dr was a lot more laid back about the whole thing. I had no drains, no tight binding. Just gauze over the incisions and a bra. She didn't give many any time period of no lifting just ' don't do more than you feel like you can do' I picked up my son on the first day (granted by accident because he had ants on him) but I'm pretty sure I picked him up everyday after that but I just tried to get low the floor, wrap my arms around him and stand for the most part.) my little one nurses to sleep and throught the night as well. I think the hardest part was keeping a bra on for support and the one I was wearing I had to pull it down and that put it on the incision but a reg nursing bra would be better. Also, he kicked my in the stitches a could times which really hurt. But that was really the only pain. Until, like I posted before, I over did it at work a week later and felt a little sore and weird on the right incision.. Maybe that's why I have problems with it now. Keep in mind my son was 12 months and about 22 lbs and it wasn't lifting him that caused any problems.

Thank you, I wonder why my chosen surgeon is so strict. I think she's removing part of the capsule (the anterior portion?) unless she can avoid it. Maybe it's because mine is ruptured? How long was your surgery? Gosh, this is so tough.
January 18, 2015
Yeah maybe it's because of the rupture she has to removed some of the capsule. See. I had no problems and my capsules were very soft and thin. I don't really remember how long (I was sedated) maybe 30 minutes.
January 17, 2015
I know she said she concerned about a galactocele as a complication, that's why she wants drains (and back up drains, yikes).
January 17, 2015
Yeah there's a range of ideas on this from drs. Some think that if it forms it will re absorb naturally, some would risk it and drain it if it did form, and some want to avoid it all costs with wrapping and drains. It just depends on your doctor. I'm glad mine was like she was but that's because mine went well.
