Jaw Surgery Must-Haves

I've received a few comments and messages from people who have upcoming jaw surgery.

I'd thought I'd share a few of my must-haves for surgery.

I didn't go overboard with prepping for surgery, but the few things that I did buy were totally useful.

1. First and foremost - DENTAL HYGIENE!

-if you don't already have one, invest in a water pik! You won't be able to use it for the first couple of weeks because of the stitches, but afterwards, it will become your best friend.

-alcohol free mouthwash, it is safe with stitches.

2. Water/Food Intake
- I purchased condiment bottles from Bed Bath and Beyond to "squirt" soup, smoothies and water into my mouth. If it's not liquified enough to work in the condiment bottle, you shouldn't be eating it.... for the first few days anyway.

3. Swelling
- JAW BRA. I cannot recommend this enough. I found mine on Amazon. It was totally worth it. I wore it for the first few weeks on and off. It helped tremendously with swelling and pain. I would use it in conjunction with a homemade sock ice pack across my face for the swelling by my nose (see picture).

6+ Months Post Op

Braces are getting ready to come off! Extremely happy with all of the work my orthodontist has done with my bite/alignment.

I'm not completely satisfied with my midline, which was shifted by the surgeon in the procedure, but I am not prepared to undergo another surgery to correct it. If Tom Cruise can rock it, so can I!

1 month post-op

Feeling good! I'm officially 1 month+ post-op and back to work! Still sticking to softer foods, mostly just because my back molars do not touch yet, so it is hard to chew.

I don't see my orthodontist until April 4. I assume she doesn't want to see me until then because she doesn't want to make adjustments while the bone is still healing.

Still some swelling in my cheeks, but nothing crazy.

Provider Review

Dr. MacNicol

He has been fabulous thus far, however, it is a long process ahead still, I will review at a later date.
