I started seriously considering a tummy tuck in...
WORTH IT$7,332
I started seriously considering a tummy tuck in 2015, however it had been on my mind much earlier than that. I had my first child when I was only 19. During that pregnancy I gained 30kg then lost all the weight plus another 5kg during breast feeding. My stomach was significantly disfigured due to excess skin which would hang down below my stomach.
After exploring local options for surgery, I began to research surgery in Thailand. After many reading many reviews, I decided to go with Dr. Pornthep through Somnio. Somnio helped me to get a quote for my tummy tuck and breast augmentation. I booked my own flights but after that was done, Somnio sorted everything else for me. It cost me $10,500 NZD for my surgery, 5 nights in hospital, 9 nights in a 5 star hotel and transportation from the airport to hospital and hotel.
When I arrived in Bangkok, I was met at the gate and escorted through the airport by a lovely man who helped me collect my bags and navigate my way through customs. I was then taken to the van which transported me to the hospital. I stayed one night in the residence suite at Bangpakok9 as my appointment was early the next day.
Surgery Day - I went down to the 9th floor at Bangpakok9 hospital and met Jayna the international customer service coordinator. She was very friendly and even helped me with some calming techniques as I was feeling very anxious. Jayna took me for my blood test first. The room was small but looked clean and sterile. However, all the previous patients blood vials were still sitting on the table when I sat down. The nurse had trouble getting blood from me initially, they said that might be due to dehydration. They tried another vein and all was fine but they didn't manage to place a line in and told me that they would do that right before surgery. I then went on to have an x-ray and some other tests. I was cleared for surgery by a cardiologist then I went to my room to wait for my appointment with Dr. Pornthep. During my consultation with Dr. Pornthep, Jayna escorted me and there were also 2 nurses in the room. It was rather daunting undressing in front of then all, but dr. Pornthep was very professional. He asked me what I felt the problem was and what I wanted to achieve. I tried on a few different sized implants but I liked the first ones I tried on (350cc). Once we had established what I wanted to acheive and what he was able to do, Dr. Pornthep went over the risks. I will be honest, hearing all the things that can go wrong was scary and for a moment I was tempted to back out. However, I didn't come all this way to back out.
I went back to the residence suite, packed up my bags and took them down to my hospital room on the ward and was given some special soap to use before my surgery. I washed my body gently with this soap and was careful not to wash off the markings that dr. pornthep had drawn on me. Once I was ready to go I waited in my room for the nurse to collect me for surgery.
I was wheeled on a bed through the hospital down to the floor where the operating rooms were. I was taken to a small room which I can only describe as a little dingy, not at all fitting with the glamorous presentation in the rest of the hospital. I was worried for a moment that this is where I would have surgery. None of the nurses in this room spoke english and the nurse who put my line in didn't wear gloves. I was starting to panic that this was not at all what I thought I was signing up for. However, after a few minutes I was being wheeled away into another room. This time, this room looked much more like what I expected a operating room to look like. I felt relief and excitement knowing that very soon the surgery I had been waiting for, for such a long time was finally happening.
A moment later (it seemed), I woke up in recovery. I was in so much pain and I could barely speak because of the tube that had been down my throat. I begged for morphine and this was quickly administered. After a while in recovery I was taken back to my room on the ward. the nurses helped me settle back into my room and made sure I was comfortable. I called my husband and let him know that I was out of surgery then I went to sleep. I was brought some food, but I was too sick to eat it due to the morphine. The nurses stopped the morphine and gave me some anti nausea medication and I was soon able to eat.
Day 1 Post Op - I was still pretty sleepy this day and spent the whole day in my bed except for getting up to go to the toilet.
Day 2 Post Op - I was getting up and sitting in the chair in my room, feeling much better and later in the day I had my drains removed.
Day 3 post Op - I felt the post op blues quite badly today and it didn't help that I had a fever. Despite being up and walking around much more, I was feeling sore, swollen and sad.
Day 4 Post Op - I woke up feeling much better, and I was cleared to go to my hotel. I went to the dentist then was taken to my hotel.
Day 9 Post Op - Went back to the hospital for my post op consultation. Dr. Pornthep checked everything was looking as it should then he said I was ready for my stitches to be removed. I was expecting it to hurt but it was fine.
Day 14 Post Op - Home time! 15 hours of flying back to Auckland! Phew! It was good to be home!
Day `18 Post Op - I was parked outside school ready to pickup my two older kids, I'd just picked up my preschooler after having lunch with a friend. No straining lifting or anything. I hadn't had any alcohol or blood thinning medication. As I parked up I felt something crush the left side of my chest. I looked down and my breast was double the size. The pain and pressure was overwhelming so I immediately called an ambulance then called my husband to make arrangements for the kids.
When I got t the emergency room I was screaming in pain and being pumped full of morphine but the pain was out of control, morphine did nothing. I was left like that for nearly 12 hours before my husband starting making a scene and a new nurse took a look at me. By this stage I was hardly able to breathe due to the pressure on my chest and my breast was at least 3 times the size, my collar bone was lost under swelling and I could not move my left arm at all. The nurse immediately called over the head doctor and within 30 mins I was being prepared for surgery.
I had internal bleeding which was stopped cleaned out and my implant was replaced. I was very unstable and I had to have 6 blood transfusions.
I woke up almost pain free and grateful to be alive and still have my implant. But now I'm very weak and very sore. I'm also feeling quite traumatised I'm having nightmares and flashbacks. I'm also feeling very guilty for having surgery in the first place.
The surgeon who saved me said that my plastic surgeon did a great job and this was a rare complication to have nearly 3weeks post op but it can happen with even the best surgeon in the world.
I'm now 31 days post op and recovering well.
