My chin was never been huge or distracting at all...

My chin was never been huge or distracting at all but I've always liked shorter, more feminine chins. I had been wanting a subtle change of look and this was the one thing that I wasn't that happy about my appearance.
I decided to do some research and found a doctor with the right credentials and went ahead with it. When I googled him I found good reviews but it was mostly for rhinoplasty, I only found 2 reviews for genio and they were positive.
I made it very clear that the goal of the surgery was to reduce the vertical height of my chin. He told me he could take quite a bit of bone and also add some projection. I've never had a problem with my chin's projection but he showed me how it would look in the computer and the change was subtle and looked good so I agreed to it. One thing people need to keep in mind is that your profile can look good with added projection but how it will look from the front is a completely different story. He only showed me how my profile would look. Also, he didn't ask me to get X Rays done.
When I woke up from the surgery I felt like I was hit by a bus but a few hours later I did feel a lot better. I kept reading about people being out and about, feeling great and with almost no swelling after a week or 2... What?! let me tell you something, they must be super healers because my experience was completely different. I looked like a circus freak for 10 days and it took me 4 weeks to look and feel a little bit more like old myself. They did not warn me I was going to swell up like a balloon and look like a real life monster for that long. Every time I looked in the mirror my stomach would drop, it was really shocking. Even now (it's been over 5 weeks since the procedure) my chin feels stiff and I can't eat with my mouth closed which is super embarrassing (it is getting better as the weeks go by thank God). I didn't know the recovery was going to be this brutal, I couldn't close my lips for 3 weeks, even now I struggle to eat hard food and take ages to finish a meal. Forget about kissing, it's getting better but come on! All this suffering to look worse? My chin looks significantly longer than before and looks like it was pasted on my face depending on the lighting. I think that adding projection made it longer, theres no other explanation, he said he took some bone out but not as much.
I'm not disclosing the name of the doctor right now because a tiny part of me has hope that in a few months when all the swelling is gone it will look decent. I already know I'm not going to look better but if I end up with a chin I can live with that would make me so happy, I don't want to go under the knife again. Unfortunately the reality is that most likely I will be needing a revision, maybe the technique where the contour your chin burring it down would help my case. I'm already looking for the best doctors when it comes to chin reduction. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

had a genioplasty procedure approximately 14 years ago. The improvement or change in my chin was good, but, unexpectedly, it made me see that much of the length of my face is in the midface, which now, is more where my eye focuses. So, moral is, when we begin to change architecture of the face, even those things we don't like, the result may not always be what we anticipate. Regarding the healing...I can't really remember, but I think it was quite awhile before most of the swelling resolved.

That is true and a very good point.
The doctor did say that much of the length of my face was in the jaw/chin so I definitely look worse and have a less balanced face now that the chin is longer. I really hope the swelling is taking a long time to resolve and the result won't be as disappointing. One thing I realized is that the added projection brings more attention to my chin instead of the upper portion of my face. I would take my old chin back in a heartbeat.

My heart goes out to you. I had a sliding genioplasty, a painful and traumatic surgery, my chin is too prominent, looking to do a revision but am very hesitant to do as other surgery. The only good thing that came out of it was that it did take care of my TMJ. My lower gums feel tight, I've learned to live with it but all in all I really regret the surgery. The only reason I did it to begin with is because I lost a chin implant because my plastic surgeon screwed up so the chin implant had to be removed. Apparently the only answer to compensate for the stretched skin and to avoid deformity was to do a sliding genioplasty.

I would appreciate it if anyone has had a revision genioplasty and help on how to find a good surgeon. I have googled this specialty and not come up with much. Thanks.

I'm so sorry this happened to you as well. At least in your case the doctor messed up, I feel like I did this to myself :( there was nothing wrong or that had to be fixed in the first place and I should've left it alone.
This procedure should only be performed on men or women who have very short, recessed chins. If you are only looking for more projection an implant is the way to go. I'm scared I ruined my face.
Thank you for sharing your experience and hopefully we can put this past us soon x

I've read that Dr. Majid Jamali has a lot of experience with genioplasties. There's a few of reviews in real self and they say that he is great, very detailed and a perfectionist. Because I had a bad experience with this procedure I dont know if I should go down this route again. I'm looking into the technique where they burr down and contour your chin, I think this might be the way to go for me because after the genio my jaw is not a smooth line anymore... You can see a shadow on the right side of my face where the chin was cut, it's noticeable in some lightings in a 3/4 view. I've found that Dr. Eppley and Dr. Lamperti seem knowledgable in this procedure, this is more than just shaving off bone, soft tissues are just as important and they seem to know how to get good results.
That being said, I am extremely nervous because there isn't that much info out there and I'm always wary of reviews, before taking the leap I will be doing an extensive research, im not going under the knife again without an expert in this procedure.

Hi, aleinad, I can't seem to find the same message or thread where I'd responded to you earlier, but I had put Dr. Little's website URL in it and found out we aren't supposed to do that. I guess it didn't get caught when I put the one in for the genioplasty website, since you were able to go to that one. Anyway, His name is J. William Little in Wash. D.C., so you can just Google him. His site is really informative. How are you feeling today?

Thank you cherribear! He does seem great, I wasn't able to find anything on chin reduction though. He does genios or burrs down the chin?
Btw I found a doctor that is amazing when it comes to jaw/chin reductions, his name is Mark Zukowski. He does a lot of FFS (facial feminization surgery) on transsexuals who want to achieve smaller chins and jaws to look more feminine. I was checking some posts where they were comparing the best doctors who specialize in that, Jeffrey spiegel and Harrison lee among them (Harrison lee is Caitlyn Jenner's surgeon) and basically what was said is that Dr. Zukowski can achieve the most dramatic results, taking you from jay Leno to having a little girl's chin. Half of their patients are men with strong jaws and masculine chins who want to look soft and femenine to live their lives as women. If these doctors are able to help them achieve that, I'm sure our chins will be a piece of cake. It's worth looking into it so will keep you posted :)

That sounds like the perfect surgeon for you. I looked at his website & it's impressive. Are you far from him? Are you starting to rethink having additional surgery now? Or do you still need more time? Well, he sure looks like the way to go if you do.

Seeing some progress...

It's been 6 weeks since surgery and while I still regret doing it, I can see the swelling (very) slowly but steadily subsiding. I see small changes as the weeks go by and I'm starting to feel more like myself. My doctor wasn't kididng when he said the swelling would take several months to go down... I am 99% sure it will not be any shorter than my original chin, which was the whole point of the surgery, but if in a few months when the rest of the swelling resolves I end up with the same length I had I will literally cry of happiness, throw a party and never ever mess with it again.

I had a similar procedure. I think most likely with the doctor you may have been happier choosing. The doctor I chose has done over 500 chin reductions. Anyhow, what I will tell you was that i was only semi satisfied up until about the year point. Until them I felt my chin was still too massive. I was ready to complain but first I printed out some photos... and when I looked at them I was surprised to see my chin was noticeably better. The swelling had gone down so slowly, and taken so long to go down, that I really was looking at myself in the mirror and seeing me months ago. But when I put it on paper... side by side... after a year. Well, amazing. Also, in the last few months the number complements i have been getting "you look good" have been noticeably increased. I also still have some stiffness in my lower lip (though I could eat rather well after only two weeks) even after a year. So keep a stiff upper lip... umm, i mean lower lip. You are still VERY early in this healing process.

Thank you for your comment skydani and for sharing your experience with me, I really appreciate it. It makes me feel better to hear that it took you a while to see the final result. Even though I'm trying to be patient, this definitely helps :)
My lips also changed shape a little, my lower lip looks a bit thinner but that part I don't mind really.
Do you mind sharing with me the name of your doctor? this time I really want to do my homework in case I need a revision. Thanks again!

Skydani are you now pleased with your results and happy you had it done? I'm 7 weeks post chin reduction and mine looks bigger than before. It's made me regret having it done
Thanks
Thanks

I am very happy I had it done. Though I wish it could have been more aggressive. That written... even a year post op I still (slowly) continue to see swelling dissipating. I looked back at my 2 month photos and OMG I was still so swollen... at the time I did not realize it. If you want to message me privately I am willing to share most post-op photos.

regarding dimpling... I am not sure which method you had... but regardless I would guess nerves, soft tissue and muscle are all still trying to get their bearings. Dimpling (or new wrinkles or indentations) would seem normal. These things will probable continue to evolve and eventually could be treated with filler and/or Botox if really annoying.

Hi I had exactly the same problem, my chin looked similar to yours to start and now it looks longer from the front. I'm 7 weeks in and still not happy, has yours improved? Is it swelling? I'm hoping mine is
