I am 54 and have always had good skin. I used retin-A through the years with good results. Since I intend to have a face lift in a year, I was doing this to get my skin in optimal shape beforehand. Also, I was starting to develop lines above my upper lip and had a couple of faint scars that I wanted taken care of. I opted for the full Pearl fractional and the laser. They gave me a valium, but it was an extremely painful procedure. It sounded like a jack hammer digging down into my face and would inflict a deep burning pain deep into my skin. I have a high tolerance for pain (natural childbirth), but this was pretty hard to endure. He did two passes over my upper lip area.
Dr. Stong said I would look like raw burger meat when he was finished and he was absolutely right! My face bruised and swelled to the point that I was unrecognizable. I had to put a vinegar solution on my face several times a day and then apply ointment. I did it on a Thursday and returned to work Tuesday. I wish I could have stayed at home longer, because my face was still beet red and raw and I had to keep the ointment on. Needless to say, everyone was shocked when they saw me.
When I went back to Dr. Stong, I told him I was concerned about my pore size and the grid marks left on my skin and especially across the top of my forehead. He said they would disappear and that my skin would continue to improve and that optimal results would occur around/by 6 months. I went back 7 months post- op and showed him that I still had grid marks on my forehead. Also, I don't know if it's pores or tiny holes left by the fractional procedure, but they never went away. The lines above my lip are not as noticeable, but still there. He said he thought my skin looked fine and that "my perception is my reality". He did not offer to do a follow-up procedure or different laser procedure to rectify the results. He asked what skin care products I use and said he did not approve of my products and that he would get his skin care consultant to talk with me about their line of skin products. Since I had pretty good skin before, I was doing this as a preliminary procedure to make sure my skin was in optimal condition before undergoing a face lift in a year or two.
Please be very careful when deciding to undergo this procedure. It is expensive, painful, a lot of down time and your skin may not respond well. (I forgot to mention that with this harsh treatment of the skin, I ended up with a lot of broken little capillaries on my face that were not there before. That has definitely aged me!) I just wish I had heeded all the reviews of dissatisfied patients. There's got to be a better procedure than this!

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience here on RealSelf. How long ago did you have this treatment? Are you comfortable sharing before and after photos with the community?

Unfortunately, no matter how much time we take counseling patients before and after surgery, sometimes they just don't hear us. We specifically talked about doing facelift surgery and the patient went with a laser skin resurfacing procedure instead, because of cost. We specifically explained that a laser skin resurfacing would not tighten skin or lift the facial soft tissues. Further is was explained that this procedure was a wrinkle reduction/brown spot reduction procedure and that was what it was intended for. We are unable to address the laundry list of issues this patient lists above because they were not present at her follow up. We were disappointed because she did not keep her routine follow ups and disappeared from the practice until about 6 months following the procedure. When she came back she was complaining about skin tightening issues which we specifically discussed before the procedure could only be addressed with a facelift surgery. Please make sure the procedure you select is the right one to achieve the results you are looking for in order to not waste your time and money and that it is affordable for you. You can't simply substitute one procedure for another and expect similar results. We spent a lot of time during consultation discussing this with the patient.

She was not complaining about the things a face lift would address. She is unhappy that it made her skin worse. "I still had grid marks on my forehead. Also, I don't know if it's pores or tiny holes left by the fractional procedure, but they never went away. "

Hi I agree with what you said,I had pearl laser in Australia 2.5 years ago and the results have been horrific.I thought I had done my homework with a top and highly respected plastic surgeon. The alarm bells should have gone off when he said it would be deep!To cut a very long story short I have ended up with an ongoing mess.I initially had first and second degree burns, with flushing pain and severe burning for nearly a year. The flushing is still going but I have a different type of burning pulling sensation, which from my research is caused by fat loss and epidermal and dermal atrophy. My face is unrecognisable as my own.I have fat loss all over my face and still going, lines and holes cris crossing all over my face, some are raised some sunken in.The original acne scarring is much more noticeable and the worst part is it continues to deepen.I have huge hollows under my eyes and my cheeks have all but dissapeared,as the fat disappears my skin is sagging and forming deep lines all over my face. When I look in the mirror all I see is a weird looking face that has no resemblance to my former self. The changes happen so quickly that I see changes from the morning to night.I have deep indentations all over my forehead that start as a small circle then they continue to get deeper and bigger and then indentations forming lines radiate from the initial hole.I can't stand changes in temperature and if it is over 18degrees I flush and burn.To put it plainly my face is a mess,I have severe depression and anxiety as a result of this disaster and my life as I knew it is over.It is very frustrating to be told to get over it,not helpful, all I can say is stay away from lasers they do untold damage and doctors believe all the BS that they do no harm. Its ok for them as it's not their faces or lives they are ruining,I really don't know how they sleep at night.Best wishes to you all. Chris.

I'm sure she disappeared because of the treatment of your patients just like I did. Spent thousands to correct the damage that was done to me. I got the same canned reply on my posts.

Gaslighting, distracting, and projecting is a very unprofessional attitude. This response looks like one composed by a lawyer and did not address any of the issues the patient had.

I'm SO sorry you have had to endure this doctor. I have permanent damage to my eyes and scars that are not concealable from face lift. I hope you are doing better!
