Hello-
I am an African American (AA) male in my early 40s. I started noticing my hair loss in my late 20s. I simply ignored the loss and would change the way I styled my hair to camouflage the loss. I hoped that the hair loss would eventually stop but unfortunately by my mid-30s, my hair loss was very noticeable which caused me to have low self-esteem and be very self-conscience of my appearance. In my mid-30s I started to seek help by reaching out to various Hair Transplant Doctors in Chicago. To name a few, I reached out to Dr. Raymond Konier, Zeiring Medical and Dr. Yates Science. I walked away disappointed due to at the ( Konier & Zeiring) clinics being unable to successfully perform transplants on AA hair due to the uniqueness of the hair type, specifically in the way it curls which makes it difficult for the extraction of the hair follicles. Dr. Yates on the other had some success in the area however was a bit too pricey (but I was willing to sacrifice) and not very personable. He seem very knowledgeable but we just didn’t make that positive connection. After leaving his consultation I felt optimistic but still discouraged. Due to the sensitivity of hair loss for me it’s important to feel very comfortable with the Doctor and the entire staff and that wasn’t the case. So with that being said I simply cut my hair very low and continued to attempt to camouflage my hair loss. At that time less doctors had experience dealing with African American hair but fortunately due to the advance in technology and progress in that area due to the huge market to service AA that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. More doctors claim to specialize in AA hair. So fast-forward 5 yrs. later I decided to give it another try. In my new search I found Hair Restoration Service of Atlanta (HRS) on the internet. The testimonials and YouTube videos seemed pretty impressive so I decided to give them a call. After speaking with HRS in particular Marshal Boyd, I walked away feeling encouraged. He seemed pretty knowledgeable and confident, plus their prices were affordable. During my final deliberation I was leaning towards either Dr. Yates Hair Science or HRS so I had a final conversation with both and at the end I decided to choose HRS. The entire staff at HRS was simply great, attentive and very professional. They made me feel valued as a customer, comfortable and address all of my concerns. I live in Chicago so I flew into Atlanta. HRS booked my hotel and arranged for transportation (airport, hotel, office). They had constant communication up until my procedure and after which was important for me. I’m now 7 days into my FUE procedure which I’m very happy that I had done and very excited about my future hair growth. The procedure was long (7-8 hours) but painless. The worst part was the swelling (forehead, around eyes, face and itching. But that’s to expect after having any type of surgical procedure. The swelling lasted maybe 4-5 days. I wanted to share my experience pre-op and post-op as well as my entire journey through the process with the hope that this help someone. I will be posting pics and updates regularly.

I want to point out that the itching occurred in the donor area and not the area where the grafts were implanted. It was initially a 10 bit mainly because I would gently rub the area which seemed to make the itching intensify even more (silly me). But fortunately the itching has since subsided as I’ve been using leave in conditioner to soothe my scalp which has helped BIG time!
