Saline Explant Planned with Dr. Kolb - Would Love Support from Those Who Have Used This Dr. - Atlanta, GA

Hi Ladies,
I want to thank all the ladies in advance for their support and kindness. I am looking for advice and support specifically from those who have had explants with Dr. Kolb in Atlanta. I am a 40 yr old mom of 3 and got my implants after nursing my 1st daughter because my right breast was very concave. I had always been very small but didn't think there was anything wrong with that. After nursing I felt I was 'deformed' and hating shopping for bras and swimsuits etc. Well, I got saline unders 180 and 210ccs, very small, just wanted to be back to normal looking. Everything went well for 8 years until I started not feeling well. I had low energy, fatigue, and tingingling in my hands that spread to my entire body. I got bloodwork that showed a positive ANA and low wbc and platelets. I was terrified I was going to be diagnosed with a terrible disease and even got a bone marrow biopsy along with many many tests.
I finally got the idea after 2+ years of this that it might be related to my implants. I searched online and found Dr. Kolb, I read her book and within 2 weeks I was in her office for a consult.
Let me say first that I think Dr. Kolb is brave, strong and compassionate woman who has helped a lot of women. But I am still so nervous about the surgery and some of her methods. She did muscle testing in the office which I had never seen before and prescribed a lot of medications and supplements to clear infections, fungus, mold, bacteria, etc. She was VERY busy and I waited 2.5-3 hrs from the time of my scheduled apt. to meet her. I felt like our apt was a little rushed b/c she was so busy and I couldn't organize my questions well enough at the time to get them all answered. I have emailed her since and she always gets back to me within the day or the next day which is amazing.
I just feel nervous about going under about taking all of the medications and about her busy schedule. I would like reassurance/experiences of anyone who has had an explant with Dr. Kolb. I would love tips or advice for surgery or post surgery. I also suffer from mild anxiety and sometimes have panic attacks (which I understand can be a result of biotoxins from infection) and want to keep that under control pre operation.

Oh also, I wanted to know if any very small chested girls got a lift with explant. Dr. Kolb recommended one but don't feel I will have anything to lift! She said she could create a shelf under my breasts so my bra doesn't ride up, but that is not a big concern of mine. I just want to look like I did before. Did you ladies with very small breasts feel more deflated post explant? She said she would do the explant through the under nipple incision where my implants were put in. Have any ladies had explants with that incision. I know there are so many topics in this post but I want advice on a lot of things!! Many many thanks.

Thank you for sharing all the above! I am in a Facebook group called "Breast Implant Illness and Breast Cancer Survivors Home." There are a number of women on the forum who have had their implants removed by Dr. Kolb. They might be able to give you the feedback you are looking for. Personally, I think she charges WAY too much. Also, the consensus among the women I've encountered on the Facebook forum is that it's best to wait at least six months before getting a lift or a fat transfer—especially if you don't have a lot of breast tissue. I too am preparing to have my saline implants removed by a very highly regarded plastic surgeon in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. I have not yet had my consultation, but the price they quoted over the phone (for explant only was between $2,100 and $2,900. Another PS I went to gave an estimate of $4,000. At any rate, I wish you the very best and look forward to how things go for you. I would just encourage you to really do your homework about this before you take the next steps!

I am calling Dr Kolbs this week to get their viewpoint on things. $10,000 does seem a little high, maybe because that price has the breast lift or breast shelf price built into it? I would ask them to clarify for you. I have had 2 quotes here in Tamp for Explant of Saline Implants, they were not going to remove the capsule and fat transfer to my breasts at the same time. $8,000 and $8,500. I am not going to use either of those Dr as I now realize for the Explant to be done right, the capsule has to be removed also. I have also decided against any Fat Transfer, just going to love myself as god made me. The Lipo sounded like a horrible surgery and grosses me out. If they could inject someone else's fat in me, and I did not have to go through the Lipo, I would do the Breast Fat Transfer. Anyone want to sell me some fat? LOL! Anyway, I called Dr Feng 's office on Friday. Very, very impressed with how they do things. They are in Cleveland. First you go to the Cleveland Hoital and have a Ultrasound Mapping done. That costs $600. You will be handed the results. If you have any Silicone it will show up and the Dr will mark exactly where it is in your breast area for Dr Feng to be able to remove it from the body. You will then go see Dr Feng for 2 hours and go over it all and any questions you have. You can either come back or do the surgery while there. Of course you will book all this ahead. Dr Feng is in a 15,000 sq ft building with 3 levels. I think she has 30 employees as they offer many procedures at her practice. She will remove the implant, take a picture, remove the capsule, take another picture and the whole thing is sent to a laboratory to be tested for any cancer cells. Sometimes the silicone and the silicone outer shell on saline implants can cause cancer cells. She has several Dr's of Anastheia, not nurses, that work with her and do not leave your side during the surgery. They do not use gas, they use a medicine where you will wake up 6 minutes after the surgery has ended and you will not feel to bad, as they have not used gas on you. Dr Feng also uses Nerve block shots into the breast that last for 72 hours, which will carry you through the worst part pretty much pain free. Her quote was $7,600 for Explant only. Of course I have to buy airfare for me and my daughter, rental car, hotel and food also, but I am 54 years old and want this surgery to be done right. I want to be safe and I want my daughter to feel I am in goodhands while she is waiting for the surgery to be over with. Sorry for rambling. If you like Dr Kolb and feel comfortable, that is the main thing. I am also interested to see her procedure compares to Dr. Feng. Dr. Feng's philosophy is if the implants are making you sick, when they are removed the body will be able to heal itself. I think Dr Kolb believes they cause fungus, bacteria, etc and we need to get that out of our body also. I know about Muscle Testing and I believe in it, if done correctly. May I ask how many Meds she has you on to remove these things from your body prior to the surgery, and how much they cost you? Did she send you for Blood work and how much did that cost? Or maybe all this is included in the $10,000 price? As far as the incision area, I know they can be removed the same way they were put in. They can also be removed from under the breast and that will heal really fast. My implants are 23 years old and they put them through my navel, so they will not be removing them that way. I do not see how she can remove the capsule through the aerola? Did she say she could? I know she always removes the capsules. I personally do not want anyone cutting into my aerola. Echhh! I will post later after I have spoken with Dr Kolbs office and see what my impressions are. I will tell you if I would go to her or not. Right now it is between Dr. Feng, Dr. Kolb and Dr Melmed in Dallas. All three of these Dr's have removed thousands of implants and are very good at it. I want the best for my health. I want to add my left breast has deflated, hence the decision for the Explant. I was a 34 nearly A before and I would say I may be a B now. The deflated side still has a small amount of saline in it, maybe I will just be an A cup? Not sure, but do not really care. Just want them out and to be healthy again. It is interesting as the side that has deflated I look 10 pounds thinner in my clothes, the BI side looks cowy. The human body is amazing and will suprise you at how well you heal. You could always buy a water bra for times when you go out. Good luck and try not to get too anxious. I think Dr. Kolb is a great Dr.

I live in Jaxcksonville, can I ask who's this surgeon in Ponte Vedra? Did you end up explanting?

sbexplant, I highly recommend that you take ReallyRosie's suggestion and "really do your homework", on many levels and particularly before jumping into surgery on March 31. And I'm not talking about the cost, but the amount of experience the surgeon you choose has doing breast explantations, AND consistently very positive reviews from patients. Go with your gut feeling; you should feel completely confident with your choice of surgeons in every way. If you make the decision to cancel, just do it and don't feel bad. It's YOUR life, YOUR body and you want the doctor who instills trust and confidence. Wishing you all the best! Sherie

Thank you VERY much for starting your story on RealSelf! It looks like you're already getting some good feedback here. I hope you keep us updated on how this all goes!

Thanks for sharing! You should listen to your voice! May I suggest you send an email to the Dr suggesting two times that would be good for you to have the Dr call. Someone with her experience should be able to make you feel wonderful about your decision! I also think she is overcharging you! I would check with some other doctors. I had considered her because of her book but after dealing with her office.. I choose to take my body and health somewhere not so hurried!

Explant now scheduled with dr. Feng in Cleveland

Hi ladies! So it has been awhile bc I have been doing some agonizing over which surgeon to go to. Thanks to the ladies for your input. I finally decided on dr feng after talking with her and I'm scheduled for April 1! Less than a month away! Just booked flights and hotel. Everyone at the office is helpful and I'm not worried about the surgery very much. My main concern is whether I made the right choice in going with dr feng, not because of ability but because she does not regularly removes lymph nodes like dr Kolb. I have had pain in my right armpit for years and I know dr Kolb takes out any enlarged lymph nodes or if they show on ultrasound (but many that she removes doesn't) I am getting an ultrasound with dr feng and she assures me there has not been silicone in the nodes of any of her smooth saline implant patients.
If anyone has thought about this aspect of it I would love to hear from you! Thank you!
Also can any of the small chested ladies recommend a post surgery compression bra?

How did your surgery go? I will be scheduling with Dr Feng in a month or so.

It went well. I am 6 weeks post op and feel pretty good. I'm having Bloodwork done soon so we will see how much things have improved. My only advice would be to talk to her about muscle repair if you need it and where she will make the incisions and drain holes as I feel mine are a little low and the drain holes are not in the incison line but separate and below. I wish someone would have told me this! Best of luck to you. Dr feng and her staff are great

Did you have muscle repair? That is my biggest concern. I chose her because I was told by Linda at her office, that she would make all necessary repairs. My explant is July 10th.
June 20, 2015
Discuss this clearly with her before hand, I should have. I also based part of my decision on the fact that I was told she did muscle repair by her office. She did not repair my muscle where it was cut at the bottom for implant, because she said it was atrophied and shortened and therefore might look odd if she repaired it. I want to believe that but I feel like it is a lot of extra work and maybe there are other reasons why she did not do this for me. She did say that functionally the pec muscle should be the same whether attached or not. Good luck!

Oh my gosh...now I'm panicked! I too am willing to pay more and travel across the country mainly for muscle repair (if needed) and cosmetic repair (if needed). Otherwise, I could pay half the price and have a simple removal elsewhere. My implants will only be 11 weeks old when I see her so I don't have any complications, they're just huge and it's my 3rd set...simply ready to get off this BA ride. Do you have distortion or deformity because she didn't repair the muscle?
