Asian Rhinoplasty Consultation Review
jessicakplanoJune 11, 2019
WORTH IT$18,500
I haven't booked a surgery date but wanted to share my consultation experience for a primary Asian Rhinoplasty.
Cost - It was $250 to book a consultation. You have to pay up front when you schedule the consultation.
Doctor - He asked what I didn't like about my nose. I mentioned my bulbous/wide tip and nostril flare. He said that my skin was thick, so refinement would be limited. He also asked if the small bump on my nose bothered me or if I had any issues breathing. He briefly looked inside my nose then said he was going to make some computer morphing pictures.
We looked at the computer morphing, and he showed what he could do to my nostril flare. I really liked what he showed me and was completely on board for that. Then we moved onto the side profile. He said my side profile and bridge were actually fine but defining the tip would raise the tip from the side view. The morphed picture of my side profile was weird to me, like I had an elf nose on because the tip was so high and a bit piggy compared to the rest of my nose. The front morph looked fine, but honestly it was not much different from my current nose. He said he would use rib cartilage and do an alarplasty and tip-plasty, and the surgery would be long, like 6-7 hours. I thought it was weird he did not mention DCF since that is all over his website and social media, but maybe I wouldn't need it since I'm not having bridge work?
TIP: If you want to get the most out of your consultation, you should bring a lot of questions to ask Dr. Yoo because he's not going to sit there and talk forever - you sort of have to lead with your own questions and ask what you specifically want to know.
Cost - I was quoted $19,400, with half due immediately if I intended to book right then. She said I would have to do bloodwork with my doctor within one month of surgery and that I should book two months out from the date I wanted surgery if I really wanted a specific date. She also said my prescriptions would be called in to my usual pharmacy, and I'd have to get those before surgery.
Final Thoughts: I did not book yet, and I am still on the fence. I don't want to spend $20k plus hotel plus airfare plus bloodwork plus prescriptions on a "just okay" nose, which is sort of what I felt I would get due to the limitations of my thick skin. The morphs were fine, but not stunning, and the side profile morph was a little jarring. The front morph looked almost too subtle for $20k, not much different than what I could do with a $50 contour palette from Sephora. I do appreciate that no one was pushy at all.
I am now trying to book a consult with Dr. Aaron Kosins in Newport Beach. Anyone met with him? He has good reviews and a few Asian Rhinos on his website, plus his staff has great reviews. I really want someone to spend a lot of time with me/discuss my options/make some suggestions, and be easy to reach and responsive if I do decide to get rhinoplasty. I did not really get that vibe from Dr. Yoo's office although I think he is very skilled and good at what he does. I just really want someone to hold my hand through the whole process and check up on me because it's a huge decision I don't want to go through alone!

Hello, I recently had my rhinoplasty done with Dr. Yoo. I know what you mean with the side profile, I felt I look like that too with the computer imaging However after surgery, my profile is what I love the most. I think what Dr. Yoo and his team are really great at is their patient care throughout the entire time from consultation to post surgery. I originally was looking to get surgery done in Korea but I didn’t like their consultation and patient care process. So I decided to go with Dr Yoo. Initially I was in contact with Vivian who is the patient care coordinator, she was amazing because I was flying out from another country and she was helpful with all the million questions I had. During surgery the Dr. Yoo, Nurses & the Anesthesiologist Dr were super warm and made me feel at ease. After post op I also kept in contact with Jinlee who is the physician and she was super helpful with all the medical questions I had. I don’t think I would of had the same patient care treatment if I went with a dr from Korea.

Thank you for sharing this info! I was hoping the morph was just a limitation of the computer imaging software and that it would look better in real life. I’m glad to hear the team was helpful - that is a really important factor for me because I’m traveling from out of state, and I don’t to deal with the extra stress of miscommunication. I read some other reviews on here that said the office was disorganized with scheduling and aftercare instructions and that they were hard to reach, so that made me a little nervous. How are you liking your nose so far? And how many days after surgery did you have to stay in town? I mentioned to them that I don’t want to stay 2 weeks coming from out of town because that would get really expensive, and both Dr. Yoo and Vivian said I should be able travel after 1 week and do the post-ops via Skype. I forgot to ask, but I’m not sure if they meant 1 week like if I had surgery Tuesday then I could get the cast off the following Monday or if it’s like surgery Tuesday and I’d get the cast off the next Tuesday? Also, what kind of bloodwork did you need to do? Lol sorry for so many questions - I’m worried about all the other little expenses like that and food/aftercare supplies/booking flights.

Hi Jessica, I’m in the same boat. The morphs don’t look very different from my current nose and I felt like I had to ask a million questions with not that much information forthcoming. I am also coming from overseas so the cost is even more onerous. Keep me posted on how it goes for you. I’m also seeing Dr Ion in London. Feel free to DM me.

Hi Anna, yes that was exactly how I felt! I can definitely understand how hard it would be coming from overseas. Good luck with Dr. Ion - he has some really nice results on his website - keep me posted on how it goes for you!

Have you thought of going to Korea to get it done? Most clinics will charge around $5,000 for the nose and almost all the doctors anywhere are highly skilled. There's a constant flow of patients getting their nose done so all doctors are very good with doing a rhinoplasty. They also are very good with customer service as well. A lot of places will offer transportation and lodging till the recovery is done for foreign clients. It just depends if you like the Korean or American standard of nose.

I’d love to get it done in Korea or even the Philippines since they work with people with noses/skin like mine - the only things stopping me are I’m really worried about the language barrier and international travel is kind of stressful for me to be so far from home - I’m still getting used to the long flights!

Still unsure about Dr. Kosins
jessicakplanoJuly 1, 2019
I still haven’t been able to get an appointment with Dr. Kosins although he has a lot of positive reviews here I’m worried his results are too natural for my personal aesthetic. I want a pretty drastic change. I’m attaching one example from his website of why I’m hesitant about him. The girl is really pretty, but to me the before and after look the same from the front. I don’t really want to pay 10k and still look the same from the front. I want my wife/flat tip to be refined.

I agree! His results are too natural I do not see a major change how you wish. I would look into dr ghavami check his instagram page he is know for the diamon tip. I see he did some asian patients and they look wonderful no bulbous tip/wide tip like this picture shown here.
July 2, 2019
That sounds great! Tip is really what I need. I am adding him to my list of surgeons to research!
July 2, 2019
Also look into dr gary motykie? He does rhinplasty that is very drstic change from before and after but yet as natural looking. Nothing fake looking very suttle and aesthetically pleasing
July 2, 2019
Oooh yes I love Gary Motykie’s work! I saw his Instagram - everybody looks so good afterwards! I haven’t researched his prices but I am definitely going to!
July 29, 2019
Thanks for suggesting Dr. Gary! His IG looks incredible. Is he much cheaper than Dr. Yoo cuz I know Dr. is one of the best ethnic rhino dr. out there but I can't fathom spending 20k for my nose rn...
July 29, 2019
Dr Gary Motykie has a lot of negative reviews on yelp. You might want to reconsider.
July 29, 2019
Thanks for bringing that up to my attention! This is helpful to know about the negative reviews. I guess back to square one :( Maybe I should check out Charles Lee

Natural results are a good thing, the amount of change you are going to get depends on your skin. Otherwise your nose can build up scar tissue and look crazy. But I did also meet with kosins I didn't like the he wouldn't do imaging because I cannot get a clear idea of after and that for me is the mistake I made in my primary. I'm not seeking a revision. Kosins is also pricier than everyone else.

I’m getting my nose done with dr Charles lee in Beverly Hills in October! If you look at his Instagram his results are really natural looking while still being a big change

Picked Dr. Yoo
jessicakplanoFebruary 4, 2020
I ended up going with Dr. Yoo, and I am beyond happy with my results. I am about 3 months post-op, but honestly I did not swell a lot - my nose looks pretty much the same as it did 7 days post-op. Please note, I DID NOT GET THE DCF in my bridge. I only had a problem with the width of my nose at the base (wideness of my nostrils/flatness of the tip), and that is all I wanted fixed. I did not ask for any bridge augmentation, and he agreed that I did not need it. He did an alarplasty to reduce the size of my nostrils as well as added several rib grafts to push the tip out more to make my nose pointy instead of smashed/flat. Honestly, he did EVERYTHING I wanted. It is my dream nose, and I am so happy every time I look at it.
I do agree with some of the posts that say Dr. Yoo is a bit robotic. He is very professional, but he is not someone who is going to be your best friend forever. I think he did his job, did it to 100% efficiency, and that's what I wanted. If you are looking for someone extremely personable, he is probably not the one for you, but I think his skill is top notch. I am personally a little wary of super personable doctors anyway because I think they can try and use their personality to sell you on stuff, and their skill is not that great. I prefer someone who is just very skilled; personality is not huge to me, but I understand it is a big deal to some people so I figured that I would mention this. The office doesn't do much to follow up - that is on you to schedule follow-ups, but I don't mind because I don't want to be doing a lot of back and forth to LA.
I know there are some bad reviews for Dr. Yoo. I too was scared about booking with him, but ultimately I decided to go with him because we share the same aesthetic vision of beauty. I think that is VERY important to be on the same page there with your doctor. Some people think that more natural looks better. Others, like myself, like a more drastic, Eurasian appearance. I would say that Dr. Yoo tends to have the latter view of beauty as well. I did look at other surgeons who were more "natural", and I did not like their work at all, so I did not go with them. If I'm paying for a nose job, I want it to be noticeable, and I felt that Dr. Yoo could give me that kind of result.
I will say that what helped me to get the results that I want is that I have known for 20 years EXACTLY what I wanted done to my nose - less nostril flare, smaller base, and more pointy tip. I looked up the medical terms for these (i.e. alarplasty, alar base reduction, increased tip projection, etc.), and this is what I communicated at consultation. I did not go in there with a wishy washy kind of "make me look hot" sort of request. I think this is EXTREMELY important if you are considering a nose job. Know EXACTLY what YOU want to do with YOUR face. Research it. Research the terms. Look at yourself in the mirror and articulate what you do not like and how you believe changing it will make you look better. Do not just go in there with a vague wish to look better or just wanting someone else's nose on your face, or he will give you what he *thinks* you want. Communication is important. Knowing yourself is important. KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT AND BE ABLE TO ARTICULATE IT! That is the best advice I can give.
If you have any other questions, just leave them here. I don't see the flag for personal messages, and I don't check this site very often since getting my surgery, so I will respond as I am able to. I hope this review helps some people. I will try and leave updates as time goes on, but honestly it's one of those things where you're happy with what you got so you just kind of go on with your life. I think that's why a lot of people vanish from this site after getting a positive result. But I will try and keep posting updates since I know the other updates helped me a lot when I was researching, and I hope this review will help you all. Best of luck to everyone in your rhinoplasty quests!

Hi could you please share profile pics? Thank you
February 6, 2020
I will try and take one and post it. Wasn't concerned about my profile, so I don't really have any.
February 6, 2020
Thanks for your review. I had a consult with Yoo as well. Question about your post op photos. The first photo of the ‘before and after’ (the left image) and the second photo of the ‘before and after‘ (right image) look like two completely different photos. Are both of these images 3 month post op? The one on the left is much more refined. I’m having my procedure tomorrow and I’m searching for progress photos. Thank you in advance!
February 6, 2020
Hi, I'm not sure I understand your question. The images on the left sides of the hearts will definitely be different from the images on the right sides of the heart because those were taken pre-surgery.
February 6, 2020
Sorrry I wasn’t clear. Your two “before” looks different to me. But nvm Yoo did a great job.
February 8, 2020
Ahh ok I see I see. One of the before pics is without makeup and the other is a full face of makeup so that is probably why!
February 8, 2020
I like your before pics better than the after pics. Is there swelling right now?
February 8, 2020
Aw thank you that is sweet! Everyone has a different view of beauty so that is understandable. I am only 3 months post op and they said for thick oily skin like me, swelling can last up to 2 years.
Thank you for this wonderfully descriptive review! I hope things go well with Dr. Kosins. Looking forward to your next update!
