It is difficult to express just how dissatisfied I am with the services I received from Dr. K. Before having sinus surgery in January, I consulted with his surgical coordinator in order to determine which medical insurance I should choose during my open enrollment period to best cover the surgery and followup appointments. What they failed to inform me of during this evaluation process was that at each followup appointment the doctor would use an endoscope and by doing that, it would be coded as surgery by their office resulting in a $150 copay each visit. I was quite shocked when I talked to my insurance company shortly thereafter to find that I owed $900 to Dr. K's. office for 6 followup visits. My insurance company told me that this could be alleviated if the doctor were to code these appointments so that they would not be considered "surgery," since they clearly were not. I followed up with Dr. K's office, and he agreed that followup appointments would be coded appropriately resulting in a $40 copay vs the $150 "surgery" copay. He agreed to lowering the $900 amount somewhat, but couldn't change the codes already submitted. After all this, I once again needed a sinus culture. Most ENT's simply swab the nose, but Dr. K insisted on using the endoscope. Although a swab is less painful, if he thought the endoscope was best, that was his choice, and once again I thanked him that I would only need to pay the $40 co-pay. Imagine my surprise when the bill came in again at $110 ($150-$40 I had paid at time of service). I later found out that he had coded this procedure with my insurance company as needing to use "complex methods" to control a "nosebleed." I never had any nosebleed and they refused to write off the $110 as was previously agreed. I've received 3 bills so far. This seems to be bordering on some type of insurance fraud, and I want no part in dealing with this doctor again. In addition to the above, Dr. K is considerably late on each visit and continually tried to sell me on the latest cosmetic services they offer. The office seemed very concerned about up-selling its cosmetic portion of the business which of course is not covered by medical insurance. I understand that doctors need to make money, just like any other service, but that seems to be the ONLY goal at this particular office.
