A little about me - 41 year old, mother of two, saline implants placed under the muscle 11 years ago. No real problems but have had a "pull" in the muscle near my shoulder blade since the surgery (on the side that was overfilled due to assemetry).

Remarried in September of last year and in a completely different place in my life and I want to be "me" again. Very active with running and working out and they seem to hinder more than they help. Husband is supportive but apprehensive (he likes "the girls" and is nervous about me having surgery).

I decided to see a different PS (other than the one who did my original surgery) and I have mixed feelings after my first consult. First, the PS was focused a lot on my original surgeon and why I didn't have a lift to begin with. It seemed he wanted to put down my original PS, which I thought was tacky. This was before he had even examined me (so he didn't even know if I was saggy or not). He stated he would do the removal in one surgery (for $2,200....I'm in Iowa) and then wait 3-6 months and decide whether a lift was necessary (for another $6,600). This is consistent with what I've been reading, so I was comfortable with that.

He said he would remove the capsule and after examination, said mine was pretty thin and it shouldn't affect my own breast tissue. Then he sat me down and told me I had four options (four, huh? I was very forward throughout the consult that I wanted my implants OUT and not replaced). My four options were: replace my current implants with new saline (which he even said after the exam that my current looked excellent and they could last another 20 years).

I informed him I had NO desire to replace my implants with new implants and shook my head "no" the entire time he was talking about replacing them with saline. Then he went on, my number two option would be to replace them with silicone implants and he started in on his speel about how they feel, how much more natural they are, etc. and I cut him short and told him I had NO intention of replacing the implants - I want them OUT or nothing. My third option was to have them removed and then wait to see if a lift was necessary, and my fourth option was to do nothing and keep my 11 year old implants that he said were "fine."

He told me he hasn't done a lot of explants, simply because very few women want to go back to their pre-surgery breasts - reiterating that there was a reason I had them done in the first place. He did say of the straight explant surgeries he's done (without placing new implants), most had excellent results without needing a lift. SO...do I find another PS? I would be curious what my original PS thinks, although he charges for his consults, which is why I thought I would get some other opinions before going to him.

That's a tough one. Most plastic surgeons are so hesitant to remove implants because they can't believe that the most beautiful option isn't what someone would want. They are all about aesthetics.

I think you just have to decide if you're comfortable enough with this surgeon to proceed. There are more supportive doctors out there, but they are HARD to find and most will want you to do a revision rather than a straight explant.

Definitely go on a few different consultations if you can to see what other doctors say. Keep us posted!

Hi, I think I would go and see a few more surgeons before you decide as you dont sound very confident in him and he sounds very pushy on replacement implants. My surgeon also asked if I was sure about not replacing, but once he saw I was he was very nice and supportive and said I should be proud of my small breasts after the surgery. It made me feel much better that he was not negative.

I agree with andi22...I ended up returning to my original ps because i had such a wonderful experience with him the first time around...but I was so nervous that he wouldn't be supportive of my decision. He kindly gave me all of my options...but after spending some time with him and explaining why I wanted them out completely, he actually discouraged me with replacing with smaller implants. He felt that I would still not be happy because I would still always feel them and be aware of their presence. I felt so relieved that he was supportive. He has continued to be supportive of my decision, even at my week post op appt. He, like many ps, doesn't do tons of straight explants when there aren't any complications....but he said he used my positive outcome as an example to another new patient of his "who just wanted her implants out after 10 years." Even though my implants were very well done, and exactly what i wanted, after 1 1/2 yrs...and the support of this forum, I knew I just needed to be "me" again and not be hindered my silicone :)....i'm of course still healing, but am so glad to feel natural again, even at a small 32A! Good luck with the search, but I think you will know when you meet the right person :)

Just an update. I've continued to consider having my implants removed, and after a breast cancer scare last week, I just made my surgery appointment for December 21st. My mammogram came back with some additional dense areas from previous mammograms. A second mammogram was still inconclusive so they did an ultrasound. Luckily there isn't any cancer but the scar tissue on my left implant is now creating more "dense" tissue areas on the mammogram. The scare was enough to push me to get these babies out. I'm scared and nervous but I know it's the right thing to do. I'm hoping with a 12/21 surgery that I'll be okay by Christmas. The PS will remove the capsule and the implants. I'll keep everyone posted. Right now, I can't wait to be the old me!

Can anyone help with a realistic recovery time. I had a week off for my original surgery and was on paid meds the first 2-3 days and then switched to OTC. The first few days were HELL but I seem to recall things being much better once I was off the pain meds. Now I'm starting to worry that my 12/21 surgery date is too close to Christmas. Is the recovery better/worse than the initial surgery? I will be having the removal with a capsulectomy and I will have drains. Thanks - already getting nervous (but also so excited)!

I just had my explant and capsulectomy with drains the Fri after Thanksgiving. Drain removal 1 week later. Not nearly as painful as having the original breat augmentation surgery 23 years ago. Did about 3 days of only bedtime percoset, and OTC tylenol and aspirin during the day. Just take things easy. Relax. Let your family wait on you. You'll be just fine. I only have some tenderness now after a week and a half.
