In my late forties, I had struggled with my weight...

WORTH IT
In my late forties, I had struggled with my weight since the age of 26, when I had to have an emergency hysterectomy and my metabolism took a dive. I had tried everything from Weight Watchers to Nutri System and everything in between, but could never get effective results. A co worker at my job told me about the sleeve gastrectomy and I could see with my own eyes how well he was doing with his weight loss. I asked for the doctor's office address and phone number and made an appointment for an evaluation. Dr. Beltre explained my options and we started the process of preparing me for my surgery. Just over 3 months later I had the sleeve performed and was home 2 days later. My weight loss started immediately and so did the compliments from friends and family. I followed my recommended diet and kept my follow up monthly visits with Dr. Beltre, which I looked forward to since he always had such positive things to say. I lost about 100 pounds during the first year and felt like I had been given a new life. It has been 3 years and I have maintained my weight loss. I have no noticeable scars from the surgery, just a much healthier, happier life. I have referred friends to Dr. Beltre with good results and will continue to do so as he is quite skilled and compassionate in his work. No regrets here ever!

Thats so great to hear. Please tell me the details of how you felt in the hospital and your first week home. Im hearing horror stories about the vomiting and nausea from people in my support group.

In the hospital, I had some nausea and spasms in my diaphragm from the drain that was inserted because the tip was touching the diaphragm and irritating it. I had only one episode of vomiting the day after surgery, during the swallow test when I had to swallow contrast dye and be x-rayed (it tastes AWFUL!). I am told that my surgeon no longer inserts drains nor does he do the swallow test. I have never had nausea since. Some of my friends who have had the sleeve have told me that they vomit if they eat too much, but I have not had that problem in the 3 years since the procedure. As far as pain relief, I took advantage of the medication in the hospital, mostly to help me rest, but didn't really need it once I got home. During first week home, I spent much of my time making sure to sip enough liquids each day. Your stomach is tiny and it takes a while to sip your daily requirement of fluids. I was given a guide as far as how to gradually increase my diet from liquids to soft foods, etc. I followed it as much as possible. I was back to my job as a nurse 2 weeks after the surgery. (On a side note, since the surgery, I've gotten married and moved to Europe.) I say to anyone who is considering a sleeve gastrectomy to go for it. I can't express how much of a positive impact the surgery has had on my life!

Congrats you look great!
Can you tell us more about your stats? SW CW GW? Height?

Thank you! I feel great too! I am 5'7" and my SW was 255. My GW was 150 and I achieved that about 13 months after the surgery. I have been able to maintain my weight for 3 years. I do sometimes gain a few pounds (by eating too much bad stuff and sitting on my butt too much), but I can easily lose them by going back to a low carb, high protein diet. I get my exercise by walking. I could lose more weight if I choose by doing a more strenuous exercise, but for now, I am comfortable.

How fantastic you look. I'm sure you feel amazing and your health is even better. A huge congrats to you. You look 20 yrs younger. Your hair is amazing, any issues with thinning or losing it?

Thank you for your kind words! I do feel amazing and I no longer have issues with high blood pressure. It is wonderful to be able to walk without getting short of breath. I did have quite a bit of hair loss which started a few months after the procedure. I was well informed about it pre op by my surgeon. Thankfully, I have always had a very thick head of hair, so even though it seemed like I lost handfuls each day, it was not noticeable to anyone else. I do take daily vitamins designed for people who have had bariatric surgery, but I didn't take any special supplements designed to encourage hair growth. I am grateful that the surgery has improved not only my health, but also my entire quality of life.

I had my sleeve Dec 18, 2014. I take bariatric supplements and also a hair specific(started the hair supplement almost a year prior to surgery). Had some hair loss, but now it just looks dry and dull. Although I have went from very dark brown to a lighter medium golden brown, which might be the cause. I'll have to ride this out until all new growth is at full length.
Thank you so much and have the best weekend ever!
