I have lived with gynecomastia my entire adult...
I have lived with gynecomastia my entire adult life until now. I developed what is known as "true gynecomastia" as an adolescent before I even knew there was such a thing. I have never been particularly overweight and did not understand the unusual breast development. It was only during a routine physical examination that I eventually learned of the existence of the condition after my physician at the time wrote the term "gynecomastia" in my chart. It was never serious enough to warrant any real attention from a doctor, nevertheless, I found it to be unsightly and even uncomfortable at times. It annoyed me that it was not something I could fix by myself through exercise, etc. After conducting some research and discovering that there was actually treatment for the condition, I began the process of looking for a surgeon who could perform the operation. Dr. Hopkins' website was among the first that appeared, after doing a quick search on the internet. Right away, I was impressed with the reviews, as they were all positive. I telephoned the office and scheduled a phone consultation to be had with Bob, the surgical tech. Due to a tight schedule, I had scheduled the phone call for a specific time and was pleasantly surprised when my phone rang at exactly the time we had specified. After getting some basic information about the condition and the procedure, the inevitable question of cost came up. I was, once again, pleasantly surprised when I learned that the entire procedure would be much less than I had previously anticipated. After having answered all my questions, Bob transferred me over to Reception and Scheduling (Brenda and Gale) who set up a face to face consultation for me with Dr. Hopkins. I met with Dr. Hopkins, a very personable and professional gentleman, who went over all the details of the procedure with me and left me feeling like I was in good hands. After the consultation, I met again with Brenda and Gale who worked with me to secure a surgery date, quite a bit into the future, as due to my school schedule. Finally, the day for my pre-op appointment arrived. I met with Amber, the nurse, who went over all the things I was supposed to do before and after surgery. She was very efficient, and after the procedural review, a couple of "before" photos and then receiving a prescription from Dr. Hopkins for post-surgery meds, I was out the door till another two weeks. On the day of the surgery, I arrived a little early and was greeted by Amber, who received me at the patient entrance (the surgical site is co-located at Dr.Hopkins' office, by the way). After changing into some surgery attire and securing my belongings, I was prepped for surgery by Amber and the Anesthetist. I was a little nervous, but my nerves were unfounded. I was surprised how quickly the anesthesia put me under. The next thing I knew I was waking up and they were telling me that everything went "very well." I was surprised because I was not in any pain at all and wondering how that could be possible after surgery. I was amazed at the immediate results I saw on the day of the the surgery. It was like night and day. And it was only going to get better. I went back the next day for a post-surgery follow-up and was given an ACE bandage for compression and some post-op instructions. I was to take it easy for a few weeks, though I felt fine, and take a lot of motrin to reduce the swelling. Recovery and healing went very well in the weeks following the surgery. The staff were very accommodating during that time in letting me pop in periodically to have some fluid drained around the surgery site. It's been about three months since surgery and everything is coming along great. The entire process from start to finish was painless and I definitely recommend Dr. Hopkins and his staff to anybody considering a gynecomastia procedure.
