After 4 months of trying the oil cleansing method, I came to conclusion it was NOT for me. I developed cystic acne, something I never experienced before. I switched back to my simple face washing routine:
-Purpose gentle cleansing wash
-Pixi Glow tonic toner
-Eucerin daily protection spf face lotion (I use a night cream for PM)
This has slowed new acne from forming, and is slowly healing the red marks left by the OCM breakout. I was referred to a dermatologist who prescribed me doxycycline and .025 retin-a cream. She advised me to use a benzoyl peroxide wash as well, but my skin is so sensitive I'm worried about stripping it with so many chemicals. I use a salicylic acid cleanser about every other day. This is my skin on the day I received these prescriptions.

I have been taking 100mg of doxycycline in the morning and at night, along with a probiotic and vitamins at lunch. I plan on using the Retin-A 2x/week for 3 weeks and then switch to 3x/week for 3 weeks and gradually increase to every night. So far I have been using a gentle salicylic acid cleanser with this routine, and I have noticed some flaking (I have dry skin anyway, and it's winter), thus my slow approach towards the Retin-A. My face has little visible improvement, although it seems like more acne is coming to the surface (getting whiteheads from precious cysts).

Improved Texture/Flaking
7Seashells4meJanuary 15, 2018
I’ve noticed less new bumps and the majority of the visual acne is due to redness. Here is a picture of me with makeup today. I have noticed more flaking as well due to the retin-a, but no major breakout because I am taking it slow. Still doing only 2x per week. Been taking the doxycycline consistently in the morning and at night.

I would honestly use the Retin A every night now and go thru the turnove process versus taking it slow if I were you

My Son is going thru this and went to every other day after every day For his first week. And now he’s going back to every day and honestly I think it’s better to start that turnover process sooner than later and it will be more effective for you and I’m not sure what kind of make up you are using but you want to make sure that your make up sits on top of your skin so that it does not exacerbate your skin conditions just be very careful about those ingredients

How are you doing now? I think we started about the same time last month. I went from every day to every other night and now every 3rd night. I honestly want to give up, my skin is so flaky, red and itchy. I’m hoping that this phase will be over soon. I’m also prescribed with aczone which I have to be consisted with but I’m afraid that it will cause more irritation and dryness.

Hey! I'll add an official update tonight. I hit the 6 week mark for both retin A and doxycycline and I am seeing solid improvement. I am currently using the Retin-A every other night and I have not seen dramatic peeling throughout this whole process. I say, either continue using the Retin-A consistantly and "power though" the rough phase OR do what I did and take it slow. For me, I would rather be gentle, not experience the horrible phase, and temporarily cover with makeup. It worked well for me. Stick with it though. I think the Retin-A will eventually show results no matter what route you take <3

For future readers, IMO the retin-a is the most important part of this regimen and you are better off going to an extremely mild cleanser (cetaphil) and using the retin-a as frequently as you can tolerate. I would have started nightly and backed off to every other day if it was intolerable, with the goal of 1-2x per day eventually. Gently rubbing off loose skin in the shower without an exfoliant (dry hands damp face is about as much friction as I use). Makeup is tough with retin-a because it catches the flaking skin that you can't otherwise see. Mix liquid makeup with non-comedogenic (cetaphil) lotion for better results.
