I had surgery with Dr. Gikas almost 2 1/2 years...

I had surgery with Dr. Gikas almost 2 1/2 years ago. I wanted to wait until the results were final before I left a review. Now that I know that it will not change any more and the hard extended tip is not swelling but a bunch of cartilage and this is my permanent nose shape, I will now leave a review.

I went to him for a rhinoplasty because I was unhappy with the shape and I could not breath very well. He suggested a septo-rhinolasty to fix my deviated septum as well as a chin implant. I was hesitant about the chin implant because I had heard from another surgeon that it makes the face look longer. Dr. Gikas assured me if placed properly it wouldn't. The main thing I wanted changed about my nose was the walls were indented in, to bring them out. Also I wanted the tip less bulbous, the tip raised and my flared nostrils fixed. He said he was going to do those 4 things on my nose as well as straighten my septum and do the chin implant, which should take about 3 hours total.

After waking up from surgery I found out that it had taken almost 6 hours, which I never would have had gotten it done had I known cause I didn't want to be under anywhere near that long. And now that I know this is my permanent nose, here are the results... The main reason I wanted a nose job was to correct the indented walls. They were not touched, they are still just as indented (1). I also wanted the tip raised, this was not done either, it still hangs just as low (2). I also wanted my flared nostrils fixed, my nostrils also were not touched (3). I also wanted to breath better, I breath no better than before the surgery, actually it's worse (I'll get to that later) (4). Though he thinned the tip out some, it's now rock hard (5). And you can see a white ring of cartilage on the tip in certain light (6). That was the only thing he did out of the 5 things I wanted corrected and the 5 things he said he was going to correct. And he did something that we never even discussed, he shaved down the bridge of my nose (7). We had never talked about that and I never wanted that. And he shaved it down too much so there is now a slope in my nose (8)!! Plus, the 2 nasal bones didn't fuse back together all the way so you can see in certain lighting, as well as feel, a small crevice (9). I still have a noticeable scar on the bottom of my nose that you can see when I look up (10). There is a small indentation on the left side of the bridge between the nostrils that I guess I need to have filled with permanent filler now (11). The tip, while made thinner, wasn't taken in at all and still sticks out (12). And with the bridge shaved down it looks like it sticks out even more now (13). The septum was straightened a little, but not much, it feels as if it's only about 25% straighter than before the surgery (14). And since it's still deviated and the walls are still indented, my breathing isn't any better. It's actually even worse because the nasal bone is now thinner, + deviated septum & indented walls = less airflow. I get almost no airflow through my left nostril. And since my nose is thinner but the walls are still indented, when I sniff too hard they vibrate and I snort!! (15), which never happened before! And after all this time I still feel pressure on the nasal bone, it feels like someone is constantly pressing on it (16). I miss my old nose.

As for my chin, while the implant extends it out, it also make my face look a little longer (17), which he said it would not do, and I am not happy with at all. You can both see and feel the implant run below my jawline (as seen in the pic). And there must have been a lot of nerve damage because my chin is still numb after all this time (18).

Since I'm so unhappy with my face, I now have to go have a nasal revision (not by Dr. Gikas!) to fix all the things that were suppose to be fixed in the original surgery. And possibly get the chin implant raised too. Others might have had good results from this doctor, unfortunately I did not, at all, and for the 18 reasons given above, I do NOT recommend him.

The positives.. he was easy to schedule for and there was no consultation fee. Other surgeons I found charged high consult. fees which is why I didn't see them, unfortunately. The negatives.. I made about 5 office visits to him. The first few were around 15-30 min waits. The last couple times were about 45 min. waits, and there were no other patients there. The receptionist both times told he that he just stepped out of the office for a bit (1). I initially considered gyno surgery also with him. He told be he would do it but I didn't need it, it would go away with more exercise. Gyno (hard lumps under the nipples) does not go away with exercise. After hearing that statement I decided I was going to have someone else perform this surgery (2). He gave me steroid injections to try to reduce the extended tip (which didn't work because it ended being cartilage). First time the needle was excruciating, it hurt more than the surgery. And then the actual steroid hurt going in. The next visit I asked him to use a smaller needle. He did and it was painless, it must have been much smaller. Why didn't he use this the 1st time? (3). And this time I felt no steroids being injected. Honestly I think it might have been a very small amount because he said he wanted to do a revision if the steroids didn't work (4). Regarding the revision.. I told him how the indentions weren't corrected and that was the main reason for me wanting a nose job. He said I never mentioned that in my consultation. I told him in fact that I did. So he went and looked through his notes in my chart then said "ok well I can give you a revision to correct that" (4!!). And lastly, I went to see him 2 or 3 weeks after surgery and I didn't go back for almost 2 years because I was so upset with how it looked. And I would think in that time they'd call to check in on me, to schedule a visit or at least ask how my nose and chin were doing. But nope, never received a call. Again, I do not recommend this surgeon.
