My “All on 4” implant journey

ORIGINAL POST

My full arch “all on 4” implant journey

Smiling Texan
WORTH IT$39,000
After much agonizing research, I decided on Radiance (Dr Iskandar) for my full mouth restoration. I visited a few places and selected Dr Iskandar because of his sincere nature and the clear investment he has made in his business. He is in it for the long haul and will hopefully be around for many years after my process is completed. It is important to me that I can use this dentist for many years.
I also wanted a practice that could manage my husbands care as well. Radiance also offers general dentistry. The office is beautiful and brand new. The location is ideal for me as it is on a major highway that runs close to my house. It is actually in an area where many highways meet, near DFW. It’s adjacent to one of my favorite stores (Daiso) which is kinda nice.
I currently have 19 teeth. 6 are natural the rest are crowns. All my uppers are aging crowns.
One by one, my teeth are failing and will crack. The only option is to remove the tooth. This is how it’s been for a while. I have good bones, gums and my mouth is currently healthy. It’s really hard to see that I have no molars but my teeth are starting to shift and buck in the front.
I can pay thousands here and thousands there for a temporary solution, get individual implants as needed and deal with every tooth as the crown fails or I can do the most radical option, full arch restoration. Every option is expensive. Full arch restoration will end my problems (I hope) and give me a nice smile, to boot.
So Tuesday (12/19) I go in for impressions and I plan to have extractions, implants and temps in January. Crystal Ultra arches will finish my restoration somewhere around June.
I’m scared and excited.
I plan to keep track of it all here, RealSelf really helped me with my research. I will also do a YouTube channel to track my progress.

Congrats! I had research obsessively and Dr Iskandar was one of my top 3 that I was interested in. Ultimately I went with Golpa Implant Center but from what I researched you are going with an excellent dentist! And lucky for you he is local to you!! I am 5 weeks post op. The people on here are fantastic and are so helpful with tidbits and suggestions or just general information. Good luck with your journey! I look forward to following along on here!!

Your transformation is pretty amazing! I just love your teeth! They are permanent already, correct?

Thank you! I love my teeth too! Yes, because Golpa has a lab right on site you don't have to wait for the permanents you get them the next day. That was one of the deciding factors for me when I was choosing a dentist,
December 20, 2017
I was under the impression that this process is somewhat unique, more of a dentist preference. Radiance has a full lab as does Fast New Smile but they prefer to wait for some healing before they put in the permanent arch. The faster process is certainly convenient, especially for people that have to travel. I can’t even imagine how your confidence has improved. when I was in my 20’s, before all my teeth were crowned, I felt the sting of the discrimination you experience when you have bad teeth. I was invisible, basically. I never want to feel that way again.

Yeah it definitely seems to depend on the dentist and their preference. My confidence has boosted quite a bit since the procedure.... I'm no longer afraid to laugh without covering my mouth, I am naturally smiler so it's nice to no longer have to smoke with my mouth closed. Being that I work in an office environment, I no longer fear talking to someone while standing and then seated... I was always afraid they would be able to see inside my mouth while I talked. All in all it has been a great confidence booster and not to mention a relief from the daily pain I was in.

Congratulations!!!! You are going to love your new smile and new life! I had my upper arch done on 8/24 and my life changed drastically in 4 short months. I wish you all the best on your journey! Please keep us updated on your progress!

You are insanely handsome... and I would guess you are one of the lucky ones that was born with great teeth! Wow! Ummm... I have a single 32 year old daughter.... All kidding aside, what a great job your doctor did! I am hoping for a dramatic change myself and just worry about my speech. has the temp affected your speech?
December 29, 2017
I just came from the dentist. I will be having 2 lower implants with a partial plate and a full upper with 4 implants at the end of January. I will be given Halcion IV for sedation. I am impressed with the dentist, Dr. Oust, and his committment to his patients. I do worry about the sedation - I have had Versed for colonoscopys but not Halcion. I've read that it is the dental drug of choice both oral and IV. I guess I'm just worried in general about the outcome. I'm 78, look and feel younger, but I don't want to look like I'm trying to be 20 with bright white teeth. I just want to be able to eat comfortably and have anopen smile. Does anyone else have these fears?
December 29, 2017
I really dislike the bright white that so many people get. I really hope my permanents will be a perfect natural color.

I hope I am adding to this correctly... I’m thinking I am not because it’s not asking me pre/post date info. I may have to move this elsewhere at some point. Anyhoo, I went in to get my impressions. Lots of activity going on around me during the visit. Frank first. He’s such a nice guy. I keep waiting for hard sell, pressure, slick sales-y stuff. Nope. It is what it is, no smoke and mirrors. Sorted out some last questions and off I went for facial orientation pics, I may have that name wrong. They scan my face and use it for various things during this process. I was taken into the procedure room and Dr Iskandar spent a long time with me about the shape of my temps. He’s just such a nice, sincere man. He is never in a rush and it’s not just for show. I talked to another very nice employee and then the dental assistant (I must remember her name, such a sweet girl) started the impressions. I was a bit concerned as my past impressions have been handled roughly with huge metal trays that hurt and made me gag. She is a dainty woman so I knew she would not be rough. It was a breeze. The impression stuff has no taste to me, but a bit of a strange smell that I kind of liked. It was familiar. In any event all that was over in 5 minutes and I didn’t lose a crown, which was a huge fear. I hear back out to Frank to schedule the procedure. Jan 19, 2018. The countdown begins. I KNOW I picked the right doctor. All of the doctors I looked at were within 5k of each other. I knew I didn’t want to go to a chain and I really didn’t like the demeanor of another one I visited, he did not project the warmth and compassion I was looking for. Dr Iskandar literally oozes compassion and warmth. He is a nice man and I feel he is a good man. His staff is warm and compassionate. They all seem to enjoy their jobs. All these details matter. I know I am in good hands and I can’t wait!!!

Very exciting!!! The countdown begins!!

I'm having both arch All-On-4 done next Wednesday at Firewheel Dental Implant & Periodontics. I'm excited, but freaked out too. I'm getting long-term temporary arches that will last 1-2 years, so I "only" had to come up with $28,000 this go-around. I'll have a little bit of time to save up for the final $26,000! (ugh, that makes me cringe). I just bought something on Amazon you may want to consider. It's a Gel Ice pack face wrap https://goo.gl/o8iPSm Since we'll have to keep ice on our faces for quite a while, this seemed like a no-brainer. No hands!

That gel ice wrap is great! It's what I used plus I bought extra ice packs. So I would wear the head wrap and use an additional ice pack on the chin and bend it to ice the front of my mouth too. I was very lucky to not have much swelling at all and no bruising. I did do a couple of things in preparation for the procedure too. I was super nervous about the swelling and looking like I was from Whoville. Hahaha. I am going to just copy from another post I posted on. ....I started a Vitamin D (10,000 ui 1x a day) supplement prior to surgery to help with the bone strength and healing about 2 week in advance. I also picked up Arnica Montana sublingual 30c pellets on Amazon by a company called Bioron to help additionally with the bruising and swelling. I started the pellets 2 days prior to surgery date, 5 pellets 2x a day. I then upped that to 3x a day after surgery and began using a Arnica gel topically on my face, cheek and neck 3 times a day. I truly think this regime has helped me with the swelling and bruising. I kept my head propped up while sleeping for the first week. And iced my face a lottttt.... Also singing loud and proud in the car after surgery helps with the speech. These are just suggestions and things I found to help :) feel free to message me if you have any questions!!

Wow, I wish I had seen your post before my surgery. I had major swelling, 2 black eyes and bruises down my neck. I'm in week 3 now and my final bruises have disappeared. Wish I would've found this website earlier..so much great information!

Why temporary arches for 1-2 years
June 3, 2018
Noooo... I have had fully functional, custom made acrylic arches since my surgery on Jan 19, 2018. I’ll upgrade to nano ceramic bridges within a few months. I’ll keep the acrylic bridges just in case I break the nano ones. These are temporary but not generic, poorly fitted ‘temps’. There seems to be varying qualities of temps. These are good enough to be finals for someone wanting acrylic finals. I had my surgery just 14 weeks ago.

Thanks. Also, You had mentioned that insurance paid for some of your expenses. What insurance do you have? I’ve been looking and most dental insurance does not pay for implants. The only ones I could find were Spirit Dental & Denali Dental. Thanks
June 4, 2018
I have Delta. While they don’t pay for implants, they paid for the exam, scans and impressions in Dec 2017 and then the extractions in Jan 2018. Both years cap at 2k.
December 24, 2017
That's very good that they spent time with you to make sure you'll like your temporaries. I'm not happy with my temporaries and they just keep reminding me it's only 4 - 6 months. Good luck with everything!

I don't mean to be rude or pry, but I'm shopping the All-On-Four procedure and am wondering what your cost was. Like you, I have 19 teeth and many crown and loose teeth. Do you mind sharing?
July 27, 2018
39k (all inclusive/lifetime guarantee) which was right in the middle of all the estimates I got.
July 27, 2018
PS, not rude at all. It’s what we all want to know! I should probably say that I selected my prosthodontist not by price, I selected him because of the level of care that I knew that I would require. To me, this was the most important requirement.
July 27, 2018
Ugh... one more comment... I also wanted temps. I did not want my permanent teeth loaded immediately. It's a personal choice, and this is why my prosthodontist is a little higher, temps add to the cost. 39k covered everything, including nice temps.
I could have saved maybe 5k if I had my perms loaded immediately.
Having so many teeth pulled at once, I knew there would be a LOT of changes to my jaw during the healing process. I really did not want to be making constant changes to my perms. Waiting 6+ months (7 for me) allows the bone and gum to heal, shrink and change shape. Personally I find it is better in my case. There is no more office visits, really.
Don't let people bully or scare you one way or the other. Talk to different doctors, call and leave a message with a medical question and ask to call you back (a big test for me) if they don't call back quickly BEFORE they get your money, imagine AFTER they get it. Research, research and listen to your instincts. Do what works for YOU.

You can see in Pic 6 how bucked my front teeth are now. This is from the lack of back teeth, I use my front teeth too much. also you can see a bridge in the same shot. one of the anchor teeth is weakened and it’s only a matter of time...
December 20, 2017
Oh holy crap, I just saw you're in Wylie. So am I!!!
December 20, 2017
What the heck? I’m in Woodbridge, where are you? I didn’t check Firewheel... odd now that I think of it. We need to meet up and talk teeth! I can’t wait to follow your progress!
December 20, 2017
PS... how did you know I am in Wylie? is that in my profile?
