2500 Graft Hair Transplant
All in all I had a very favorable experience with Dr. Berkowitz and his hair-restoration team. It has been a year since I had my procedure and I now feel that I can accurately asses the results.
My initial consultation with Dr. Berkowitz and his patient care coordinator, Maria, provided me with the basic understanding off what the procedure entails and what I could realistically expect in terms of results. In truth, the consult primarily confirmed what I had researched and it wasn't difficult for me to decide to move forward with the procedure.
My personal experience and thoughts about the procedure:
- You have to shave your head before the procedure. I keep my hair somewhat long so this was uncomfortable for me. If you're someone who doesn't mind very short hair then this probably won't be a big deal.
- I had 2500 FUE grafts transplanted along with the PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy. That many grafts being moved equates to a long day; approximately 10 hours. I was pretty doped up so I was able to sleep through most of it. There was some discomfort during the graft removal; this was mainly due to having to lie on my stomach and not move.
- Post-procedure care is a bit rigorous for the first couple of weeks. I did have some discomfort in the donor area along with some swelling. These subsided within 2 weeks. You have to be careful not to disturb the scabs that form over the grafts. Additionally, I had to spray the grafts with water every couple of hours. It's kind of like having a Chia Pet on your head. After a few weeks the scabs come off and it's really just a waiting game.
- My follow up visits went very smoothly. Joshua really guided me through my post-procedure care and was able to assuage my concerns. Jennifer did a great job with helping me asses my before and after photos.
- It took about 5 or 6 months before I noticed my hairline was thicker. Hair takes a long time to grow (about 1/2 inch per month), so this time frame coincided with my hair growing back to its usual length. The transplanted grafts have to go through a dormant stage before they start to grow again; consequently, my hair became thicker from month to month.
I'm told that the transplanted hair can continue to improve for up to 24 months post procedure so I'm hoping for even more improvements to come.
