You could certainly try some tretinoin on the area, but it might take a very long time to make a difference. Ask your dermatologist about hydroquinone as a possibility. The dermatologist will be able to make specific recommendations based on your skin type, and what the appropriate diagnosis is. People age differently, so I would not say there is a particular age to switch from retinol to Retin-A. In my opinion, results are better from Retin-A than retinol, so if you feel you are not seeing results with retinol, I would consider trying Retin-A.
