I want to straighten my teeth with braces now, but have orthognathic in a few years. Is this a bad idea?

I have a receding jaw, and I'm interested in orthognathic surgery. I'm not ready to commit to the surgery though, so I'm thinking about getting braces in the meantime to at least fix my teeth (they're crowded on the bottom row). But since orthognathic surgery usually involves getting braces, will this be a waste of time and money? Or will having straight teeth ahead of time prepare me for the surgery?
