SmartLipo is a brand name.  It refers to the laser liposuction device manufactured and marketed by Cynosure (  It was the first laser liposuction device available in the U.S.  There are other brands such as SlimLipo and Cool Lipo.  These are different lasers made by competitors of SmartLipo.

Laser lipo is an abbreviation for Laser Lipolysis.  Laser Lipolysis or laser body contouring is a technique of treating fatty deposits under the skin using a laser.  The laser passes via a small fiberoptic wire about 1 mm wide and, in essence, burns the fatty tissues.  It can also be used on the undersurface of the skin to tighten it by stimulating collagen formation.  The principle is the same as with lasers used on the surface of the skin.

There are several systems out there, like Smartlipo, Coolipo, LipoTherme and others.  Some of them use one laser frequency, others use 2 or three.  Some of them claim better results then others.  We have several machines and I personally do not see a great deal of difference between them.  The results are more dependent on technique of the surgeon then on machine itself.

A word of caution, because of the changes in reimbursement by insurance companies many physicians, not trained and cosmetic surgery, started opening up body contouring and liposculpture centers claiming expertise in those specific areas after a weekend course.

Make sure that the physician performing your liposculpture, or laser body contouring procedure is properly trained and certified in plastic surgery and not in radiology, family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, or pathology, for example.

This is a great question. There are so many different "types" of liposuction out there it can get very confusing. Smart lipo is a brand name of a type of laser liposuction. Laser liposuction uses a heat source to melt the fat prior to removing it. Consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon with experience with different types of liposuction is recommended to determine which one is best for you. Good luck!

SmartLipo claims to be laser lipolysis or the 'melting' of fat.  This may be performed with or without other liposuction methods including Power Assisted Liposuction or VASER liposuction.  There are many interesting claims put out by the company now and research is in progress.

Smartlipo is Laser Lipo

This is a good question and often leads to confusion. Smartlipo actually accomplishes laser lipolysis - breakdown of fat cells. After the laser treatment, traditional liposuction can then be performed to remove the melted fat. I hope this helps clarify the confusion.

Smartlipo is simply a brand of laser liposuction. Your doctor may offer only Smartlipo or an array of different liposuction options. I use only Smartlipo, and my patients are almost always very satisfied with their results. Please be sure to see a qualified surgeon who has extensive body contouring experience.

SmartLipo by Cynosure has been the leader of laser liposuction especially with the availability of SmartlLipo Triplex and the revolutionary Cellulaze technology for Cellulites. The advantages of Laser assisted body sculpting using tumescent liposuction technique are:

- less bruising thanks to the coagulative property of Smartlipo lasers

- effective lipolysis and emulsification of fat pads by the Smartlipo lasers

- significant skin tightening beyond what one would expect from tumescent liposuction

Smart Lipo is one of several brands of lipo laser

Made by Cynosure, it is probably the best known of the fat-melting lasers. It can be also used for its skin-tightening ability.

To remove fat it is combined with liposuction -- which can be power assisted, water assisted (body jet), or traditional.

The results are much more dependent on the experience and expertise of your surgeon, than on the actual name of the device used. We often feel that blending the devices can tailor the results more to the individual's goals.

SmartLipo is one type of laser liposuction

SmartLipo is one type of laser liposuction.  It is the most well recognized named nationally for laser liposuction.  This technology was developed by Cynosure Corp.  Its most recent advancement is the Smartlipo Triplex, which utilizes three wavelengths for dissolving fat and tightening the skin.  Unlike other types of laser liposuction, Smartlipo has several safety features not found in other brands.  Some of these improvements include; Smartsense and Thermaguide.  These two improvements ensure that the skin is not overheated or injured during surgery.  The most critical factor in any type of liposuction or plastic surgery is choosing a board certified plastic surgeon who has experience in all types of lasers and liposuction. Unfortunately, since laser liposuction often requires only local anesthesia, it can be performed in a physician's office which opens the door for less qualified physicians promoting this procedure. Your outcome will be highly dependent upon the qualifications of your surgeon.

Smartlipo is one form of laser liposuction.

Smartlipo is one form of laser liposuction.  This term has become synonymous with laser liposuction just like Xerox is known for copies even though there are a lot of other copy machines out there.

Smartlipo Triplex is the newest generation of Smartlipo which allows the surgeon to choose between three different laser energies to help disrupt, dissolve, and dislodge fat before it is removed.  Smartlipo therefore results in a less traumatic removal of the fat.  It also helps with tissue tightening and firming as well.

Smartlipo (made by Cynosure) also has several safety advances that other laser liposuction manufacturers do not have (SmartSense and ThermaGuide) which help protect against heating the tissue beyond safe levels.

Be aware that most people offering Smartlipo are NOT plastic surgeons.  There are a lot of non-surgeons marketing very heavily to get business and many of them even call themselves surgeons although they have no surgical training.  Make sure your physician is a board certified plastic surgeon.
