I started treatment yesterday and didn’t feel anything, so I’m not sure it was effective. I also have many short, stubbly hairs. I thought I would be smooth until the hair grew back. The doctor used a “fluence” of 10, and I didn’t get the “rubberband snapping” sensation that everyone else claims to get. The device used was an Accento machine, if that makes a difference. I am between skin type V and VI, with thick, coarse dark hair.

The fluence or energy used depends on the make of the laser. Focusing on a number is not important but your tissue reaction. You should not feel a rubber band snapping but some warmth and a mild amount of skin erythema or redness. Also you should not expect to notice much difference in hair growth until you have had 3-4 treatments and expect to do at least 6. I hope that helps, good luck!

For dark skin when using YAG laser, the type of fluence is less important that the number of pulses and the distance between them.  Make sure you are getting the treatment in a medical setting from an experienced physician.

You have dark skin and the doctor usually start with lowest level so skin does not  burn and he can increase to a limit without burning your skin
