Is my itchy face an allergy to retinol or is it a normal reaction?

I used a retinol and got a very itchy rash on my face. It felt like the rash I get when I use chemical sunscreen , which I am allergic to. But I am reading all about how rare it is to be allergic to retinol and how common it is to have red bumpy skin when you start using it. Is this probably just a normal reaction that will go away or does the itchy quality make it seem like an allergy?

Hello and thank you for your question. Retin-A topical medication can cause some irritation and itching as common side effects. If your skin tends to be sensitive, you may consider applying the medication to your face less frequently and increase use as tolerated. I also recommend an ongoing evaluation of your progress and symptoms by your board certified dermatologist and for discussion of appropriate treatment. Best of luck.
