Does prophylactic nipple-sparing mastectomy leave a higher risk for breast cancer over skin-sparing in women w/ BRCA mutations?
I am 31 years old, 5'8, 140lbs, healthy, non-smoker with a BRCA2 mutation. I've had conflicting recommendations from surgeons as to whether I should have a nipple-sparing mastectomy. I am not significantly concerned with losing my nipple- I place most importance with reducing my risk for breast cancer as it was found to be 84%. However, if there is no significant reduction in risk between the two procedures, I would prefer to keep my nipples.
