doctors recommend invisalign to correct gaps, some prefer braces. Can retainers be used instead?

Retainers do not move teeth

Retainers just keep teeth in position. They do not move teeth as they are designed to be passive. You would need something that uses orthodontic forces applied to the teeth. This could be accomplished with removable appliances such as spring appliances or clear aligners: or fixed appliance therapy with brackets and wires. Retainers would be used to keep the teeth in place once the they have been moved to their new position.
