Does IPL have any long term side effects for aging the skin?

Question

I know short term it gives the collagen in your skin a boost but are the long term effects negative? I feel like if it gives your collagen a short term boost then maybe long term your collagen will 'run out' sooner? I don't want IPL to age me in the long run...

Thank you for your question.No, IPL does not wear out your collagen.  It is excellent for treating the reds, brown and other pigment abnormalities in your skin.

To be sure, see two or more licensed
and board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make
sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have these
treatments.

I feel IPL is only helpful for browns and reds, I do not feel it develops collagen or has any "anti aging" benefits.  I suggest getting fractionated lasers or peels for a more youthful result.  Best, Dr. Emer.

IPLs are a great
treatment for aging skin, and new publications support the fact that there are
some long-term skin benefits of improving your skin over time with continued
treatments. We now know that if you have IPL treatments and continued maintenance,
that your skin age will actually decrease. This has been published now in the
US and in China with series of patients examined yearly for 10 years or more of
continued IPL use. Some 60-year-old patients look younger than when they
started treatments 10 years earlier.

So IPLs have long-term
benefits – treating reds, browns and collagen – and making your skin look
better in the long term. Find a board-certified dermatologist or plastic
surgeon to make you look the best you can be with IPLs.
