How many laser hair removal sessions actually needed - chin & neck?

Question

Hi! I’m a medium dark complected African American female in my mid 30’s with 4b curly hair. I’ve had two successful sessions with the YAG. And that includes ingrown hairs from plucking over more than a decade. I’m supposed to do a total of 9, but I’ve I’ve read that 6 sessions is 90% removal in most cases. Can I get away with less? It’s as local chain, and though my technician is very knowledgeable, I just want a second opinion. Thanks for your help!

This is difficult to answer without pictures. Diode, alexandrite and yag lasers work best for hair removal. I typically have patients do every 4 weeks for the first 3 times and then every 4-6 weeks for 3 times after. It will take a series of treatments and some people need treatments to maintain. See an expert in laser hair removal for best results. Best, Dr. Emer

Hello and thank you for your question! The Yag is a great laser to use for darker skin. What you need to remember with Laser Hair Removal for the face is that you can reduce the hair that you have now, but cannot stop new hairs from appearing. The women's face is hormonally stimulated, so when women go through different cycles of their life, more hair can appear. You need to know that doing Laser Hair Removal on your face will most likely require maintenance treatments throughout the years. When doing legs, bikini or underarms, then yes you can expect to get a large reduction for 6-9 treatments, but unfortunately, the female face is different.

It generally takes 5 to 6 treatments to reduce the hair in a given area provided that there are no hormonal problems to interfere with your treatments.  The most important thing is that you have the proper settings based on your hair and skin type.  I prefer the Gentle Yag for this reason and please consult an expert in laser hair in African American skin.  Best, Dr. Green
