Burned skin, burning sensations - one week into Tretinoin gel application. Why is my face burning? (photos)

Thanks for your question.  Any of the topical retinoids can cause a burning sensation if one uses it too often and in certain formulations.  The gels are less moisturizing than the cream forms, so you might want to look into changing to a cream.  Also, we don't generally recommend using a toner or tea tree oil with the retin-a, as that can also irritate the skin and make it too dry.  I always have my patients start with just a pea sized amount of a retin-a cream all over the face after cleansing with something very gentle like Dove or Cetaphil.  You can follow it with a gentle moisturizer, or you can mix the retin-a with a small amount of a plain moisturizer.  Start with once a week, and gradually build up use as tolerated, maybe decreasing the amount of moisturizer as time goes on.  Most people get used to retinoids over time, and they are very useful for preventing and treating acne, and sun damage.  See your dermatologist for their specific recommendations, and good luck!

Hello and thank you for your question and photos. Some of the common side effects of Retin-A (generic tretinoin) are burning, peeling, and redness. Your skin may be reacting to the amount of the medication applied as well as other products used on your face. We typically recommend washing your face with a gentle cleanser, followed by a small amount of medication, then application of moisturizer.
