Are MRI's Safe Following Breast Reconstruction with Areola Tattoo That Contain Iron Based Inks?

Question

I have Natrelle 410 implants in both breasts(real and reconstructed). I was told to have any needed MRI's prior to the areola tattoo procedure because the iron based ink would create burning.I might need an MRI in the future (leakage over time or trauma such as auto accident with airbag deployment). What type of restrictions, and/or limitations are there after the tattoo procedure with respect to MRI's? Is the MRI safe? Does the answer change based on how long the tattoos have been in place?

I have never heard of this being a problem and our breast radiologist at my institution does not see this as a contraindication.  I believe it is safe to have an MRI.

I have never had a problem with a patient who had nipple tattooing undergoing an MRI. The radiologist may have a more insightful answer at your hospital.

I  would check with a radiologist but to my knwoledghe it would not be a problem to get an MRI.

I have never heard of a problem with an MRI scan on a patient who has had an areolar tattoo following breast reconstruction. The radiology department should be able to answer this question or have information about this possibility in their informed consent process.
