Can Hydroxyapapatite + Artefill lead to hypersensitivity?

Question

I was wondering if hydroxyapatite injected into the lip cheek/malar region can lead to hypersensitivity over time? How about with Artefill present from 9 years ago? I am currently suffering from irritation (itchiness) and redness in this particular area.

Radiesse is unlikely to lead to problems, since it is a calcium-based filler and hence subject to normal metabolic breakdown with time. Ingredients that may accompany the filler, such as excipients from the manufacturing process or local anesthetic combined with it, may, of course, give rise to such issues, but typically in the injection or immediate post-injection period. Artefill (Bellafill in the U.S.), on the other hand, is a permanent filler substance that works by being a foreign body to trigger surrounding fibrosis. Adverse reactions to permanent fillers are well known to occur not only immediately following injection, but even five, ten or twenty years later, and may be triggered by trauma to the area, or dental work that manipulates the region, etc.  Permanent fillers, unlike HA fillers, cannot be dissolved away. I have success with use of intralesional injections of varying amounts, combinations and concentrations of anti-inflammatory agents. You would be wise to consult with an experienced, board certified cosmetic dermatologist. Best of luck.
