Many patients are bothered by a prominent forehead, and this is most commonly bothersome to patients due to the amount of skin that exposed and a very high hairline. If the hairline is moved down (shortening the forehead), then the shape of the forehead usually is much less of a concern. The hairline can be moved down through two different techniques.
The first technique is a hairline advancement (also known as a scalp advancement, forehead reduction, etc) where an incision is made along the frontal hairline and the scalp is moved forward in order to remove some of the excess skin and lower the hairline. The advantage of this technique is that the results are immediate and the hairline is moved down quickly. The primary disadvantage is that there is a scar along the frontal hairline (that almost always blends in very nicely and becomes hard to find).
The second technique to lower the hairline is through hair transplantation. In this case, grafts are harvested from the back of the scalp and used to advance the hairline down. The primary advantage of this technique is that it does not result in any linear scarring along the frontal hairline. The primary disadvantage is that it takes 9-12 months to see the results of the first hair transplant session, and many patients will go on to desire a second session in order to achieve even greater density along the frontal hairline. 
Both choices are great options, and it really comes down to the patient's lifestyle and preference. Be sure to see a surgeon who specializes in facial plastic surgery procedures and hair restoration in order to review all of these options in detail and optimize your results.
