65 year-old woman interested in SculptSure: concerned about the laser picking up on metal in the body.

I have a rod and screw in my back at L4-5 and have also discovered that when my appendectomy was done (when I was 12) the staples were left in! Does having metal in my body preclude SculptSure?

Sculpsure and metal in the body

The Sculpsure laser preferentially targets fat and therefore these particular areas of metal will not be a factor.

SculpSure and Metal

Metal devices are considered a contraindication for radiofrequency treatments, not for laser. SculpSure would be a safe treatment for you, provided you meet the requirements and get clearance from the physician.

The surgical metal that is inside your body can be avoided by placement of the SculpSure heads away from this area.

SculpSure

Hello GaryRay,

Thank you for your question. The metals in your body will not be of any concern with your SculpSure treatment. SculpSure is attracted to the fatty layer and will not go any deeper.  During your consultation just discuss your concerns with your provider, determine if you are a candidate for SculpSure and if you are, then enjoy your treatment! Hope this helps, Dr Faraz

Sculpsure

Thank you for your question. Your surgical metal clips and spinal hardware will not affect your ability to have Sculpsure. Areas of numbness which may occur after surgery is a relative contraindication to Sculpsure.

SculpSure Won't Pick Up on Metal in the Body

These will not be an issue with SculpSure, as they are too deep within your body to be affected by the machine, so there are no worries about them heating up. It is important to note, as others have mentioned, that you should be careful and definitely alert your SculpSure provider if you have any areas of numbness from prior surgery. This is important because it is critical for the provider to gauge your level of discomfort during the procedure and any areas with reduced sensation can cloud your judgment of pain.

No Problem

Thank you for your question.  The presence of these surgical clips and hardware from spinal surgery should have no impact whatsoever on the use of SculpSure.  SculpSure works by heating the fatty tissue layer using laser energy, which has no special affinity for metal implants.

Metal affected?

as the above answers indicate, No. The laser induced heat targets fat tissue, only goes 1-1.5 inches in depth, and could not reach these structures unless they were just under the skin. Beware numb areas that cannot be judged for warmth/hot sensation.

Metal does not interfere with SculpSure treatment

The laser used with SculpSure targets subcutaneous fat cells, metallic objects deep in the body are not affected by SculpSure.  However, numb skin areas cannot be treated safely, if the surrounding skin is numb from previous surgery, this area must be bypassed.

Good Luck!
