How is Melasma Diagnosed?

How does a dermatologist diagnose melasma? Is a biopsy required?

Doctor Answers 1

Melasma usually diagnosed clinically

Melasma can usually be diagnosed by its visual appearance and history. Rarely, a biopsy may need to be performed to confirm. Sometimes, a 'black light" will be used to help determine the extent of involvement and depth of pigment in the skin.
