Retin-A or Retinol for effective skin thickening? (Photo)

Question

I did the mistake to use hemorroid cream as I read that it works well for eye bags. The cream had cortison and my skin thinned a bit. This causes the blood vains to shine through and you can see it as a reddish area close to the eye. i read great things about retinol / retin-a that could help my skin getting thicker to hide the red area. What would you recommend in my case? Retinol cremes or Retin-A / Tretinoin? I read that some people got worse eye shadows after using Retin-A.

Thanks for your question and photo.  I hope by now things have calmed down.  I would recommend seeing your dermatologist before starting any new creams or treatments in the delicate eye area.  Retin-a and retinol can be difficult to tolerate on the upper and lower eyelid area which is very thin skin to start with.  I usually don't have patients use retin-a right up against the eyelid margin.  There are nice eye creams that have hyaluronic acid in them for hydration and sometimes a bit of caffeine that can temporarily help minimize the appearance of vessels and dark circles.  Sometimes using creams with growth factors can help promote healthy and more youthful skin without the irritation and peeling that can happen with the retinoids. Please see an expert before trying anything out on your own in that area.  Best of luck!

Thank you for your question and photograph.I recommend avoiding anything to your eyelids until the redness and irritation resolves. The eyelids are very sensitive and the skin is naturally thin. So retinols or retinoids can be too aggressive in this area. I highly recommend you consult with a board certified dermatologist regarding appropriate under eye treatments. Take care and good luck.
