Excessive Hair Loss

Thank you for your question. Hair loss is normal as new hair replaces. If you are noticing thinning, then first see a Board Certified Dermatologist for an assessment, and diagnosis. Then be certain to have a sound diet I hope this helps!

Excessive shedding

It's normal to lose between 50 to 100 hairs per day.  It sounds like you are noticing a big change in your normal rate of shedding, so it's important to see your primary doctor or dermatologist for evaluation.

There are many causes of excess shedding. In fact there are about a dozen common causes including low iron, thyroid abnormalities, crash dieting, certain drugs, dietary deficiencies, high stress. In addition there are many hair loss conditions that can give hair shedding and there are dozens of autoimmune diseases and hormonal issues that can also give shedding. In total, there are well over 100 reasons to have shedding and that's why you should see your physician.

In short, you need to see your physician. Simple blood tests for hemoglobin, iron, thyroid are the first step. Other tests could be ordered as well depending on what is uncovered during evaluation by your doctor.
