Seroma, Hematoma and Swelling

A collection of fluid under the skin occurs occasionally during the postoperative period. Aspiration of the fluid with a needle is frequently helpful. Secondary surgery is rarely necessary.

Bruising and #swelling are normal and usually increase slightly after the removal of any tape or foam. The bruising will decrease over 3-4 weeks, but may last as long as 6 weeks. The majority of the swelling will be gone within the first 3-4 weeks. However, it may take 6-9 weeks to disappear completely.

Also, as you heal, the area may feel “lumpy” and irregular. This, too, decreases with time, and massaging these areas will help soften the scar tissue. The #compression garment helps reduce the swelling, and the longer it is worn, the more quickly you will #heal. It can also assist in the retraction of the skin.

If you have any concerns about #healing, its best to ask questions of your surgeon or their nursing staff.

It is true...

...that some hematomas will dissolve and be reabsorbed on their own.  Some have to be drained or evacuated when they form thick clots.  Only a physical exam could really determine the best approach.

Can a 3 week old Hematoma be drained after Gynocomastia Surgery??

Thank you for your question.

It would be possible to drain the haematoma as advised by your surgeon. The urgency depends on the size of the haematoma and also if it is continuing to increase.

It can be drained at three weeks

A large or painful hematoma should be drained. the sooner the better , as you can develop infections or skin problems from ignoring a hematoma for too long.  small hematomas can be watched, but large, expanding ones, or painfull ones usually need drainage.

seek professional surgical opinions near you from plastic surgeons, as many will be willing to treat you even though you had surgery elsewhere.  They can let you know what they charge for their care.

Hematoma 3 Weeks Post Op

Your surgeon is right to advise you to fly back for drainage of the hematoma.  This is a rare complication with gynecomastia surgery, but it does have to be addressed to heal.  When having surgery patients should plan to stay relatively close to the surgeon until released.
