Thank you for your question Anna J. Vertical lines above and below the lips are common concerns with aging. Causes include sun damage, smoking, high use of lips muscles (such as those who play wind instruments), genetics, and natural aging. First line treatments include smoking cessation, daily use of sunscreen, fractional laser treatments, and fillers. Botox would be an adjunctive treatment that may slightly help. Please consult with a doctor for specific
recommendations. Good luck!
Improving lip lines from aging
Thank you for asking about your lip lines.
- A number of things will help -
- You may need several.
- Start with Botox into the upper lip - lines should soften.
- If that is not enough, have lip filler to restore volume to the lip.
- Microneedling, e.g. with the Skin Pen, will thicken the skin.
- A lip lift will help if the lift has lengthened - as is often the case with age, and worsens these lines.
- Finally there are subnasal implants that can be placed in office to support the upper lip.
- Deep peels and lasers will also remove the lines but cause permanent loss of color of the lip - which creates contrast with the rest of the facial skin.

Lip Lines -- Fraxel/Co2 Laser, Deep Peel, Fillers, Botox, Microneedling
I find that a combination of treatments are needed for this area including lasers, fillers and needling. Best, Dr. Emer.
Depending upon the severity of the lips lines and surrounding lip skin.
Depending upon the severity of the lips lines and surrounding lip skin, I would choose either laser or filler. Filler has minimal to no downtime. I like Restylane Silk or Belotero for those fine lines. These fillers work well with the lines without creating fullness. Laser treatment would require about a three or four day downtime, depending upon the depth of laser aggression. Both treatments require topical anesthesia . Both modalities would require repeat treatments over time.
These vertical lines can be softened with a combination of light dose of Botox/Dysport/Xeomin, fillers and collagen induction therapy such as microneedling with PRP, Pelleve or fractionated laser. Please post photographs so we can better help you. Also consult with an experienced doctor (in person) for best recommendations and results.
Lines above lips from change in dental structure of aging! What's best procedure to effectively soften them?
Thank you for your question. A series of photographs would offer the best treatment recommendations, but lines/wrinkles that form above the upper lip can be treated with either Botox or fillers, or with a combination of the two. If the lines are the result of muscle activity around your mouth, small doses of Botox will help soften these lines. If the lines are present whether your lips or moving or not, then fillers may be a better option. In cases where the muscles are causing the lines and they are present regardless of motion then both treatments can be used in combination for improvement. Hope this helps.
