How can one rejuvenate skin after using solarium regularly?

I've read that using sun bed regularly causes reduced collagen in the skin and therefore causes premature aging. Can one increase collagen with medication and have a skin that would be same as if one didn't go to tanning.

Thanks for your query. Yes there are ways to increase collagen. There are multiple collagen supplements available in the mark which when taken on a regular basis do increase collagen formation. Apart from that chemical peels and procedures like thermi or thermage do help in remodeling collagen. Use of proper sun block is a must. Hope it helps.

Tanning bed blues

Dear BekaRio:

You seem concerned about the health of your skin, and that's a good thing! I have been seeing more patients of late with melanoma and a history of tanning bed exposure, especially young women. Some of these have, unfortunately been fatal. So I just want to encourage you to find a dermatologist who is an expert in examining moles and uses a dermatoscope, to have routine exams with this doctor, and to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with micronized zinc oxide in the future.

There are so many modalities available to correct damage from tanning beds and sun exposure! You would want to start with a good corrective regimen of  properly – formulated creams containing, for example, retinoids, green tea, glycolic acid, vitamin C, growth factors, and/or elastin – promoting peptides.  Chemical peels could hasten and augment the response. Fractionated lasers (Fraxel and many others) can correct brown spots and help with fine lines. Bulk-heating devices such as radio-frequency (Pellevé or Thermage) can tighten the skin and helps with fine lines. Focused ultrasound (Ultherapy) can provide more dramatic tightening and lifting of the skin.

Hopefully you can locate a dermatologist who you can provide you the medical care you need as well as have a variety of modalities available to address whatever issues are identified during your consultation, at a price that is affordable for your budget.

All the best,
Dr. Clark
