When do I stop Minoxidil before getting pregnant?

My husband an I are planning to try to get prgnant after my next period, that is almost 2 weeks from now. I’m using minoxidil foam up until today. My questions are: 1. I have decided to stop starting today, is this safe enough? 2. I’m afraid I’ll start losing my hair. I started prenatal vitamins but is there anything else I can do to minimize hair loss?

This timeline should be fine. I recommend following up with your OB/GYN. Keep in mind, you may have increased hair shed once your stop using Minoxidil. Best, Dr. Emer

These are great questions and you’ll want to have a good discussion with your dermatologist and physician caring for the pregnancy as well. Certainly this timing is okay for minoxidil stopping. All women considering pregnancy should speak to their physicians about supplements including appropriate folic acid. Other supplements may be very relevant depending on te patients history. These include vitamin D, iron, biotin and zinc. If there are concerns about thyroid stratus or diabetes these will need to be monitored. Most of the time, hair improves in pregnancy. The only treatment that can sometimes be considered is low level laser.

In my opinion, a pregnant woman should not be on any medication. The early part of your pregnancy is when your fetus is very sensitive to anything you take
