Hi Mamosa, it appears that you have Melasma and this is probably why you were prescribed hydroquinone.  Hydroquinone is a very common treatment for Melasma and in many cases it works well to control the appearance of the dark spots. If it is not working for you, then you can incorporate Retin A, but many formulations of hydroquinone already have Retin A so you may want to verify if yours does.  Alternatively to Retin A, you could seek out a higher % of HQ.  We use 6% and 8% for our Melasma patients without Retin A and it works very well.  It should be noted that if you have any sun exposure, your Melasma will be difficult to control.  Sun avoidance is key in helping these topical medications work effectively.  

Based on your photo it's hard to tell if your discoloration is a sun spot or perhaps melasma. Regardless, adding a topical retinoid, like Retin-A, to your skin care routine would be a step that could help you see results faster. At my clinic, I regularly recommend the use of hydroquinone in conjunction with topical retinoids for optimal results in treating unwanted pigmentation. Additionally, topical retinoids can also help improve skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles. I would ask your physician if you are an appropriate candidate for a prescription retinoid. Given that we are in the sunny summer months, it's also critical that you protect your skin from the sun to ensure that the discoloration does not worsen. Use an SPF of at least 30 and reapply during the day to keep you protected!
