It is best to be close to home for your follow up care after surgery. There are many fine surgeons in Canada. Check the website for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons who has a listing of board certified plastic surgeons. Be sure to look at before and after pictures and read reviews online. Good luck.

Travel for surgery

There are many fine plastic surgeons in both countries. Find a practice with much experience. Generally it is best to get surgery where you can recover fully under your surgeon's watchful eye.

Thank you for the question.  I would suggest starting with the American Society of Plastic Surgery and/or the Aesthetic Society of Plastic Surgery to obtain a list of well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons.

Then, I would suggest you visit a few surgeons whose practices concentrate on aesthetic surgery.

***Ask to see lots of examples of their work and preferably speak/see patients who have had similar procedures done.

 Best wishes.

Mommy Makeover - Finding A Surgeon?

{{ voteCount >= 0 ? '+' + (voteCount + 1) : (voteCount + 1) }}

Thank you for your question. Finding the proper surgeon is critical to the success of your mommy makeover. You need to find a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who specializes in body contouring procedures. The ASPS website will provide a list of properly trained surgeons in your area. You should go on several consultations and see who you like best. Ask to see a lot of before and after pictures of their work. Hope this helps.

Finding the right surgeon

Hello and thank you for your question. It is very important that you thoroughly research your surgeon before committing to surgery. It is a good idea to research your surgeon's educational background, online reviews, before & after pictures, and speak with anyone who you may know who has had surgery with that surgeon. During your consultation, make sure that you don't feel rushed and make sure that you have adequate time with your surgeon and not just their patient coordinator or nurses. If the majority of your consultation is spent with someone other than the surgeon, this is usually not a good sign. The most important aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified expert surgeon who can evaluate you in person.

Best wishes and good luck.

Mommy Makeover

Thanks for your question-

Medical tourism is a hot topic these days, and even travel to the USA from Canada can be considered medical tourism of sorts. In general, it's preferable to have surgery closer to home when possible, as long as there are experienced surgeons in your area (which there are). Canadians who travel to the USA can potentially have very large medical bills if there are any complications, as provincial insurance generally will not cover you out of province.

When looking for an experienced mommy makeover surgeon, ask about Board Certification (American Board of Plastic Surgery, or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada), years of experience, frequency of mommy makeover procedures in his/her practice. Ask to see before and after pictures at your consultation or on the surgeon's website, and make sure you feel comfortable with the surgeon's recommendations before proceeding.

Best wishes-

I have had patients travel to see me from Canada. They came for fat transfer to the buttocks/hips/breasts. They claimed that there weren't a lot of PS there with the results that they were looking for, but also everything is more expensive in Canada?

Traveling Out of the Country for a Mommy Makeover

{{ voteCount >= 0 ? '+' + (voteCount + 1) : (voteCount + 1) }}

This is a very good question. The Mommy Makeover is a combination of procedures to bring a woman’s body back to the way she looked prior to pregnancy. Most commonly some variation of a #TummyTuck and #BreastSurgery are performed. Additional procedures can include liposuction, umbilical hernia repair.  The most common #breastprocedures include #mastopexy or #breastlift, #breastaugmentation, or #breastreduction.

In addition to a one-on-one consultations with a board certified Plastic Surgeon, patients always need to be seen by their primary care doctor prior to such procedures.  We screen every patient and their medical records for risks of blood clots (DVT) and then take appropriate measure.

Therefore, it may be in your best interest to not #travel out of the country for such procedures. Unless, you know the doctor or facility where the procedures take place well or have a previous experience with them, there is an increased chance of problems, #complications, or #emergencies which may lack the necessary attention as you would acquire easier within the United States.

Traveling for surgery

It is a better idea to find a qualified surgeon close to where you live.  Follow up care is an important part of your surgical success and too many times patients who travel for surgery find themselves in a bind if something doesn't go as planned and their surgeon is far away.  Look for a surgeon who is board certified, who has experience with the procedures you are considering and who you feel understands your surgical goals.  Best wishes.

Choosing a surgeon for a mommy makeover.

Mommy makeovers are more extensive procedures than the average surgery and require good follow up care as well as good surgical skills.  Finding a local surgeon with an excellent reputation whom you trust should be your priority,  If however you are unsuccessful, then traveling may be a consideration as long as you can spend adequate time recuperating near the city that you choose.  Having experience and a good reputation is very important, however if you return to Edmonton and have a question about your healing that can't be answered on the phone you may become frustrated.  There is no right answer for everyone so do your research and make your choice carefully.  Best wishes for a wonderful result and be healthy!
