The reason for a crown after a root canal treatment is to strengthen the tooth/prevent fracture.  Sometimes the process to do the RCT removes a lot of tooth structure and a crown is the only option.  Conversely, if a lot of tooth is untouched, more options are normally present.  Some dentists have little experience with veneers and will even state "unequivocally" that a crown is the only choice.  It may be a good idea to get a second opinion, preferably with someone with experience and training in cosmetics.
