Is recurrence after EVLA unavoidable? I am 30 and I had EVLT on both legs.

Question

My 3 months follow up scan shows that the veins are ablated, but after physical activity i feel throbbing and discomfort in my legs. Is this the sign of new veins forming? Is there anything i should do to prevent recurrence. I keep wearing my compression stocking but still worry about recurrence? Thank you

There are two methods that  utilize heat to close veins down. Laser therapy and radiofrequency ablation are these two methods. Both of these work extremely well and the recurrence rate should be less than 5% across-the-board.  If you are still having symptoms, the question is did any of your symptoms get better? If you noticed some improvement, you may have other vein’s that need to be addressed as well or if you have varicose vein‘s that persist, you may need a phlebectomy.  If you didn’t notice any improvement at all, your leg pain may be from something else as well.

Once you are prone to varicose veins or venous insufficiency, I always explain to people that they can always get more veins over the years.  I always say that we can treat what you have now but cannot predict nor 100 percent prevent what you may develop in the future.  There is a prescription medicine called Vasculera which can be taken once daily and may help decrease the onset of new veins. IF you have symptoms, I would recommend a new ultrasound and conservative therapy. Conservative therapy includes compression hose, leg elevation, anti-inflammatories and possibly Vasculera

The throbbing pain is your body re acclimating to the fact that a pathway has been shut off. It can take up to 9months for your legs to feel completely normal.

Hi, Once a vein is ablated it’s gone. There are several veins that could be disfunctional, most people treat greater saphenous, that is one that leads to your groin, but we also have small saphenous behind the lower leg, and other connections. Do you know if your other veins were checked and treated?EVLT is also user dependent. Meaning there could be skip lesions and connecting vessels can be there. Also, the results are not immediate. It takes a few months for your body to “figure out” the fact that the vein is gone, so it takes a while for symptom resolution.
