Is it ok to go with a cosmetic surgeon with a lot of experience?

Doctor Answers 15

Experience Matters.

Experience in cosmetic surgery is critical.  I would also advise to find a plastic surgeon who is board certified. This is very important as well.

Cosmetic Surgeons

You are best served by using ABPS certified/ASAPS member surgeons for cosmetic plastic surgery. It's your life.
Best of luck!

Should you see a cosmetic surgeon with experience?

I know plastic surgeons like to toot their horn about being board certified but if your cosmetic surgeon is truly gifted at providing exceptional outcomes, knows how to manage all of the potential complications, and has an excellent reputation with a good revision policy and less costs, its hard to argue against that.  As with anything else in life, there are always some good ones and bad ones in every basket, plastic surgery included.  So use your best judgment and make sure you're protected if something goes awry.

Is it ok to go with a cosmetic surgeon?

When considering surgery of any type why would you be willing to consider a surgeon less qualified, less credentialed and less experienced than a surgeon actually certified within his field of expertise? A surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery has undertaken years of training and commitment in order to provide you with the safest and best possible results.  Beware of deceitful marketing and fast talk by unqualified doctors. There is a reason that the standards of the American Board of Medical Specialties was created...FOR PATIENT SAFTEY!

Let's think about this another way:  if you were having brain surgery, you would want a properly trained and credentialed neurosurgeon.  If you were having open heart surgery, you would want a top cardiac surgeon.  Not someone who taught themselves or took some weekend courses.

For your plastic surgery, you deserve a properly trained specialist - an ABMS board-certified plastic surgeon.

If the experienced Plastic Surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is experienced in the procedure you are seeking - then this is a reasonable choice.

Is it ok to go with a cosmetic surgeon with a lot of experience?

Yes if the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery. Lots of experience in doing things without proper training is not lots of GOOD experience.

Cosmetic surgeon

Dear kelx1
The easiest and most efficient way to assess a doctors true trainings and expertise is to use their hospital privileges as a guide for their actual scope of practice. This can be often easily verified by asking the cosmetic surgeon if they have privileges to perform the particular surgery you are interested in at a a hospital. (Not at their own surgery center or a private facility .) Hospitals generally will have done the right research and will make your life easy.

No. But probably ok

Not all cosmetic surgeons are equal.

Cosmetic Surgeon???

Hi. To be fair, there is no such thing as a cosmetic surgeon - it simply doesn't exist, is not  a recognised medical specialty in any country, or by any respected medical licencing authority. In short, it may be a general practitioner or dentist by training. You wouldn't willingly have a bus driver pilot a plane, so it would be counter-intuitive, in my opinion, to have anyone other than a certified plastic surgeon operate on your body or face.
