What is science behind Retin-A for acne?

I understand that it doesn't kill acne-causing bacteria. How does it alter the skin's response to acne? Thanks

How does Retin-A help acne?

Retin-A (tretinoin) helps with acne by thinning the surface layer of the skin (the epidermis).  A thinner epidermis means less trapping of sebum (thick material in pores), so fewer breakouts.
