Is it normal for a dentist to continuously jam a metal cap up into my gums to move up the gum so a cap can be put on?

Placing a crown under gums

there are times when the gum tissue over grows the tooth prep when it was temporized with a poorly fitting temp crown.  Sometimes a dentist may attempt to use the permanent crown to displace the tissue if possible.  This may at times be uncomfortable and may require anesthesia.
