Shifting jaw forward to fix overjet?

I have an overjet along with many other bite problems. I'm getting orthognathic surgery in 1yr. My chin is also recessed. When I move my lower jaw forward so that my overjet is minimized.. my jawline looks slightly better (chin not as recessed anymore). However, I have to consciously be moving my lower jaw forward. I'm wondering if it is feasible to get used to this new bite position in the year before my surgery? And if not, are there tools/other methods I could use? Thanks.
